Matrioshki (Matroesjkas) Season 1 & 2 - Blu-ray Forum

On June 19 Red Square will release the 2 seasons of the crime drama Matroesjkas on blu-ray. This show is perhaps better known under its international title 'Matrioshki'.

EAN for this release is 8718868821812 although it isn't available yet on shops that provide international shopping.

A bit late to this, but it looks like a fascinating series, and I see that the DVDs were apparently English-friendly. Those seem to have been released by a different label, but is there a chance that the Blu-ray release will have English subtitles?

Also, it seems to be delayed to 19/20 July at the moment.

The distributor was previously Universal, then EIC and now the rights shifted to Red Square- who will release these revamped DVD/Blu-Ray boxsets. I don't know this publisher but I still have hope that they will add English subtitles because this shows did really well internationally.

This has been delayed again to 27 September, but the good news is that now bol.com is reporting that it will have Dutch and English subtitles.

Good news, both seasons are subtitled in English. Disc menus are static & in Dutch.

Video is 1080/50p - AVC encoded. Audio is DTS-HD MA 5.1.

Set comes in a 8-disc elite case. Presumably region free - tested on Region A & B player.

Excellent. The shipping from Bol is not cheap (€28,49!), but the item price is great, and I've ordered from there before successfully, so I've ordered again.

PQ isn't perfect but it's a definite upgrade from the DVD's.

I received my copy today.

I'm unfamiliar with this show, but this is a very interesting release. Startlingly, this is actually made up of eight BD-25 discs, with four BD-25s for each ten episode season, and each disc having two, three, three and two episodes respectively. Episodes take up more than 6 and less than 10 GB each depending on the length, which varies from approximately 42-52 minutes and usually is less than 45 minutes, meaning the box's claim of a total run time of "1000 Minutes" (i.e. 20x50-minute episodes) is pretty far off.

Also, from briefly checking a couple of discs in each season, it's pretty obvious that this is some kind of upscale to 1080/50i. The first season hails from 2005, and appears to have been shot on PAL SD video and then printed to film. The second season from 2008 also appears upscaled, but I didn't look at as much of it yet. Both seasons are also in about 1.85:1, though the second season is actually closer to 1.90:1. Perhaps this will clue anyone in to whether Red Square have simply upscaled the Dutch DVD masters.

Each episode does sport an as-yet untested by me 24-bit DTS-HD MA 5.1 track, as well as Dutch and English subtitles, which are both in a small, thin, white font that is nicely "HD", and probably makes the Blu-ray worth getting unless the DVD editions can be found cheaply*. There are no extras.

*But don't buy it from Bol.com, as it's not worth paying almost the price of the Blu-ray to ship it, especially when this could have been a 4xBD-50 release in a much slimmer package.
