I wonder why they decided to make the third disc so short.

To keep the extras with their relevant episodes, I guess? Could have been 2 discs too but all the legacy extras may be upscaled and they don’t want to starve the bitrate of the main features.

Maybe they had something they were going to put there, but the rights fell through after they had mastered the first two discs. This could have been a two disc set easily without having problems with compression.

...or four discs, and saved us the money / hassle of waiting another year!

While the picture quality on the BD remasters appears to be a big step up, I actually cooked up a BD-R (25GB) of the original DVDs for my holidays. Not only did all the classic era stories fit without transcoding, so did The Stone Tape and Casting the Runes!

That could be one of my desert island discs you've made there.

For sure!! It's a release I've been waiting for with bated breath. A Warning to the Curious is my favourite, I've resisted watching my old dvd at Halloween in anticipation.

Good Lord, those caps look stunning, great to see the 2010 Whistle has been bumped to HD too.

I don't get super excited about much anymore but this is the exception.

with COunt Magnus officially confirmed for this year's Xmas Ghost Story, (along wiht the added bonuses of the televising of the Christmas Carol stageplay, and a radio play Ghost sgtory too),, I'm wondering if it'll be added onto the BD of the recent ghost stories that is getting released on dvd soon, when they finally do the BD of it.

...was not aware that this series was shot on 16mm film...that's certainly better than videotape which was the medium used for a number of bbc productions in the 1970s..so that's great news and those dvdbeaver caps look very good....not surprisingly , this set is presently sold out on zavvi...glad i pulled the trigger in time..

..have never watched these so looking forward to this and any possible sequels..

United Kingdom About the Presentations

The films in this collection have been remastered at 2K resolution from the original 16mm camera negatives held by the BBC Archive and are presented in their original aspect ratio of 4:3 (1.33:1). Audio has been remastered from original 16mm magnetic tracks and is presented in the original mono configuration. Whistle and I'll Come to You (1968) displays some minor instances of water damage, which we have made every effort to minimise but which was eventually impossible to fully eliminate.

The video master material for Whistle and I'll Come to You (2010) is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It was produced in High Definition and made available to the BFI by the BBC.

Technical producers Douglas Weir, Peter Stanley, Orianne Bastar (BFI)
Colourist Daniel Crussell (Restore Studios)
Picture Restoration Richard Watson (Restore Studios)
Audio remastering Douglas Weir (BFI)
Thanks to Anne Farmer (BBC), Jo Griffin (Restore Studios)

Watched disc 1 ( Whistle And I'll Come To You ) last night, both versions of Whistle.

The restoration of Miller's version is fantastic, I've watched the DVD countless times, BFI have worked wonders here, Wow! Not only the Video but the Audio are improved hugely.

Nice to have the 2010 reimagining in HD too, whilst not even remotely faithfull to Monty's source material it is effective and unnerving.

Onto disc 2 tonight, shaping up to be one of the best releases of 2022 for me.

I bought this for my missus for Christmas. She’s into this sort of stuff. Hopefully she’ll love it.
They sent it to me last week. Hope there’s no tech issues with it as she won’t be getting it till Christmas Day.

I have now watched all the episodes on Volume 1 and am extremely happy. The video and audio quality is exceptional, and succeeds in significantly improving the viewer's engagement with and enjoyment of the stories. This is my favourite Blu-ray release along with Network's "The Woman in Black." Well done BFI!
