I emailed Umbrella and got a ridiculous non-answer. i asked:

"I was curious if this is the same disc you released a few years back?
In theory, there is a new 4K scan of Romeo and Juliet. I assume that it was done to produce a Blu-Ray/4K or for Streaming… any information would be appreciated.

We did release this Romeo and Juliet on Oct. And it’s a Blu-Ray edition. It should be 2K. And we work with Paramount. So they should have the streaming rights.

"I guess I wasn’t clear.
I know you released this a few years back. I’m curious if this new release is the same Transfer?
I’ve also been informed that there’s been a 4K Transfer in recent years, so I’m curious if that’s what Paramount gave you or if this new release is exactly the same as your previous one?"

He re-re-responded:

"Hi Alan,
I don’t think we have 4K master. Our Blu-Ray is 2K master. But I am not sure it’s exactly the same as the previous one.
Unfortunately, our production manager no longer work with us, the new product manager is not clear about this.
So sorry about this."

So much silly confusion.

You're talking to a customer service person who has no idea what transfers or Ks are. Why are you surprised?

The new Australian BD from Umbrella appears to be the exact same disc that's been out there for years. It even starts up with the Paramount Blu-ray logo. So it's from the same squishy HD master as all the other BD releases. (It seems to have the same geometry problem as Paramount's ancient HD master for Explorers.

)

I wonder why they're still sitting on that 4K restoration. The 50th anniversary would have been a perfect time to release it. Maybe they have a "Paramount Presents" edition planned for it?

Same here, and it's all the more frustrating since there apparently is one that's been sitting on a hard drive somewhere for five years.

The movie is already available on Blu-ray in the biggest part of Europe. In US which choice is better? A standard Blu-ray, a 4K restored Blu-ray by Paramount Presents, a Blu-ray by Criterion or a 4K UHD?

I would be pretty surprised if they brought this out in the Paramount Presents series, but they really should. Would be a day 1 from me. Even more so if it's an actual 4k disc. This is the best version of Romeo and Juliet in my book.

Will the criterion have some new bonus features as well? I'm not sure if the paramount blu-ray even had any bonus features in the first place
