General HMV Thread

Since HMV seem like they are no longer in the hands of administrators, I think a more positive thread title might be more appropriate?

I find HMV very competitive or beat online for new releases, so let's kick off with one.

300 : Rise of an Empire is £21.99 in HMV for the general release Steelbook.
Best online is base.com at £23.99, and Amazon want £26.00

Not Blu-ray, but the new boxset release of Buffy The Vampire Slayer is like £60 everywhere, in HMV it's £30 which is a steal if you ask me

The disney bogof is 14.99 for blu ray, cheaper than anywhere I've seen

Went in to the Bristol Broadmead branch today.
They had a really decent selection of 5 for £30 including; the conjuring, hangover 3, we're the millers, carrie (latest version and original) plus loads more.

They have also started to stick the stickers on the spines so you can see exactly whats included in the deal.

the Disney BOGOF was decent but they or any other retailer had not included the titles I wanted in this one :-(

Hmm.. I've actually bought something in HMV recently for teh first time in ages. There are still some ridiculous prices in there nearing £25/30 for titles half the price online but yes, they do have some decent prices on new releases.

Now, the only big problem with that is, unless it's a more mainstream title, copies are low in stock and once it's gone it seems to be gone. I've gone in looking for some of the 88 Films titles for instance in my local to no avail. They've also pretty much shrunk the BD section in half and now moved it towards the back of the ground floor while the DVD's are on the second floor. I'm assuming they'll do what's relevant to market conditions and research in the area so it could be just around here. I do find Eureka! prices reasonably competitive and some BFI and Arrows but others can be way off.

I'll be moving to the Bournemouth/Poole area soon so maybe I'll get a other perspective there.

Hmv Bournemouth and Poole stores are ok, but the one at Castlepoint had the biggest selection. Unfortunately that was the store that closed

Good thread. I called into the HMV branch in Galway last week when I was down. Not a lot great selection of Blu-rays but the prices seemed reasonable.

It's been a little while since I used HMV online, but about 6 years ago I picked up the complete X-Files DVD box from there for about £60 when other places were asking £100+

Wasn't sure they were still going if I'm being honest

Online side of things shut down, only high street stores still trade ow. Although I think they are still online in Ireland.

The one in Preston is fantastic - half the entire upstairs floor is blu-rays, and it's a very spacious store. I spend many a happy hour just browsing in there. I love the multi-buy offers.

I am not sure if this is the right thread to ask this but it's HMV related so why not? Apologies if any other user's feel this question is off topic but...

HMV have a fair few Arrow Video title's in store in a two for £25 deal, at least the last few times I went into my nearest HMV they did, I was wondering if anyone knew if the recent Mark of the Devil Blu-ray is included in that deal? I am sure someone posted elsewhere that The Burbs' is and since I really want both the two for £25 would be a pretty good deal for me, I don't usually like to spend more than £10 on a Blu-ray but I will happily stretch to £12.50 each for two terrific films (my opinion) and two terrific looking special editions full of extras.

My nearest HMV is a fair distance from my house so it would a real pain and a significant amount of time wasted to get there and check and find that Mark of the Devil wasn't in the two for £25.

I'd like to know that too. I want to give Mark of the Devil another chance given the lovely new restoration, but £14.99 is a couple of quid more than I want to pay.

I visited my local HMV yesterday and MARK OF THE DEVIL was priced at £14-99. But what I tend to notice is that Arrow titles enter the 2 for £25 deal after they've been out for a week or two, and that particular disc has been out for less than a week - so MARK OF THE DEVIL could enter the deal next week or possibly the week after.

Thank you for the reply, £25 for Mark of the Devil on it's own?! Holy Cow! No thank you. I will maybe give it a week or two like you suggest, frustratingly the HMV website is useless and doesn't list in store prices or deals on specific titles (as far as I can make out anyway, I can't find anything on their website about prices or individual titles).

Interesting - I got Mark of the Devil from Birmingham HMV for £14.99 yesterday. I wonder if individual branches have free reign in pricing.

Sorry, not £25 - £14-99. I was thinking about the 2 for £25 deal and wrote the wrong number. D'oh!

However, I'd guess that it'll be in the deal within the next week or possibly fortnight.
