UK Charity Shop Finds

This afternoon, I received a text from my girlfriend, informing me that she had purchased the BFI DVD of Jean Cocteau's Orphée from a local charity shop for £1.49. Score.

I love charity shops, but it's not often I find an arthouse gem amongst the endless copies of Training Day. The best find I ever made was a legit Criterion DVD of The Silence of the Lambs for £2.00. The only time I've ever found a Criterion title in a UK chazza.

What are your best charity shop finds?

Found Disney's Frozen on Blu-ray for £4.99 a week after its release. Found a load of complete DVD boxsets on the cheap, too.

My favourite (not Blu-ray related) was the Limited Edition Beatles Rock Band with guitar, drums, etc. on PS3 for £20.

Pacific Rim for £1 about a fortnight after it's release is my best blu find.

I picked up still sealed Blu's of Nosferatu, Serpico and Wings for £4 each a few months ago.
At a car boot sale some poor seller didn't realise that Blu-Rays were different to DVDs and I picked up the the extended Dances With Wolves on DVD and Blu-Rays of Kick Ass and the Jurassic Park Trilogy. The total cost - £2

Wow, you guys are lucky. I can barely ever find a good DVD in a charity shop let alone a Blu-ray. Same goes for CeX or Cash Converters. I mostly don't even bother anymore!

Lol. I remember once counting 14 copies of Terms of Endearment on blu for £3 at one CeX. Seems such a random title for so many people to trade in.

Why would they get rid of such a decent film? Ah well, their loss! Shame there probably aren't 14 people who would want to buy that film on Blu-ray living in one particular area.

Could it have been they were traded in en-masse? Someone bought them in bulk (probably online) for less than the trade-in price and made a small profit? I did see it for a few quid online once and thought 'that's a bargain', but already owned it.

There are very few Blu-rays in the charity shops around here, but I do find a surprising number of factory-sealed DVDs. I wonder where these come from -- regular punters, who never got around to watching them, or old warehouse stock?

The other week, I picked up the following sealed DVDs, all from the same location, for two quid apiece:

Full Metal Jacket
My Fair Lady (two-disc SE)
The Wicker Man (two-disc SE) -- I'm giving this one to my father-in-law, as I already own a copy

Found many great DVDs, books and LPs at amazing prices but in terms of BD - I picked up a copy of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory for 50p once.

Nothing in charity shops, I rarely go in them. Mrs goes in when I'm in Forbidden Planet then I pop in to tell her when I'm done.

Bought some really good bargains from boot sales and markets though. My last boot sale batch was:

Never had much luck Blu-ray wise, but picked up many a bargain DVD from charity shops. Picked up three of BFI's Children's Film Foundation releases for £1 a few months back.

Only real find for me was Thief with the limited edition slipcase for £15.

i found Australian crime drama Snowtown for only £1.50 and Simon Pegg's Paul for only 50p.

It was a good saturday.

Which charity shops are you guys getting these great deals from?

I used to volunteer working in a few Cancer Research charity shops a couple of years ago and not once did I ever see a blu ray come in to sell, they did often get some good sealed DVD's though.

I got Titanic on vhs.

In all seriousness and i know there not charity shops but i once found 2 copies of The Thing steelbook, 2 copies of the Big Trouble in Little China steelbook, Scanners steelbook, An Americxan Werewolf in London steelbook and about 4 other assorted arrow amarays in the same cash generator for a grand total of about £50.

A like new copy of the infamous Expose (aka House On Straw Hill). I looked for months, for a copy, then just as I had given up, I came across a copy in a charity shop.

I have also added a load of James Bond books to my collection thanks to various charity shops. None that were first editions, but to a collector, any edition and printing one doesn't already have is sought after.

I've had loads of good stuff from charity shops and the like. Picked up Lawless and Zero Dark Thirty BD for £2 each the other week.

Oddly, I've also picked up the odd R1 Criterion DVD from one particular shop, inc Hidden Fortress and Rififi for £1. They don't seem to discriminate between R1/2/3 or whatever.

That was on DVD. I have since found out that is is a cut version, and was originally given away free with 'DVD World Magazine'. Still, it has a place in my collection.
