Hit up the charity shops in Wilmslow, Cheshire this afternoon. It's a well-to-do area, and I did find one decent DVD: Luis Buñuel's Los Olvidados. Only saw two BDs, neither of which was to my taste (Inglorious Basterds and something else I don't remember).

I've found some nice stuff there myself. The Criterion dvd of Dead Ringers (OOP), Tarkovsky's Stalker and Nostalghia, Inception 3-disc BR with the lenticular cover (case was smashed to bits though), Meet the Feebles dvd and the 2-disc dvd edition of Mulholland Drive. Everything between 1-2 euros.

One of the shops I visited this afternoon had around half a dozen BDs in stock. They are not as prevalent as DVDs, so the choice isn't there, yet. About the best thing they had was the two-disc BD of Donnie Darko for £2; a good deal for someone, but I passed.

I think the nearest thing to a bargain I got this year was an Oxfam store selling on eBay, where I managed to get Pialat's À Nos Amours for just over £2 delivered...technically an OOP title but still easily available. Not complaining though, as I was going to pay £6-8 for it soon anyway! |

Paddington - £2.99
...but mostly they only have DVDs, nearly always early Warner Bros titles in the old cardboard cases. Though lately I've had more luck with Poundland: Arrow season one BD Anchorman 2 Transformers: Dark of the Moon 3D - all £1 each new. Well, it is Poundland. |

Not bad! I remember kicking myself for not buying the Dual Format edition for £7 when I had the chance. I finally have it on Blu-ray thanks to the StudioCanal set but it would've been nice to have the BFI release as well.

Lucky! I'd like to get this, but I do think that Eureka have an upgrade lined up already as they have hinted so a couple of times since the BFI release was cancelled. It's a 4K restored edition, and other than the Preminger set probably got the biggest response out of those announcements, so they'd be silly not to shell out for the remaster and get this out to us!

I worked in Wilmslow for ten years, between 1988 and 1997, and it has always been populated by arrogant, charmless types. I rarely go there these days, other than to visit the charity shops. Alderley Edge, just down the road, is the same. I've made some nice finds in both places, and my girlfriend once found a brand-new designer handbag, still with the tags, so it's worth the occasional train ride out there.

Having just moved, I decided to check out the local car boot sale this morning (Silloth, Cumbria). Pretty dire to be honest with no Blu-rays to be seen and the usual million copies of The Matrix and Pulp Fiction on DVD. Did scope three DVD's for a £1 though:
- The Art of Getting By (Fox) - Jeeves and Wooster: Series 2 (VCI) - The Legend of Hell House (Fox) Also picked up 3 x kids Ladybird books from 1986/87 which were like new for £0.10 for all 3. The inner kid made me do it: - Transformers: Galvatron's Air Attack - Transformers: Autobots Fight Back - Bravestarr: The Phantom Herd I'll have to have a scout round the charity shops of Carlisle through the week, when I go to check out the local CeX. |
