Well, I think Stalker has to be an actual quality release first... there's already one blu-ray of Stalker, but it's just totally crap-quality.

I would be stunned to see this go unreleased on Blu-ray in the States. The question is if this film, along with The Third Man and other flagship Studiocanal properties that were recently remastered, was able to be re-acquired by Criterion. Surely, an offer was made by Criterion, and probably for both of the aforementioned, as well as a number of other titles...but did Studiocanal accept, or did a new player somehow make an offer?
One hesitates to believe Studiocanal left the US market for themselves, but then, the new BD of The Third Man is region free... |

Is the deal between Studio Canal and Lionsgate US still on? From what I understood, LG had licensed blanket access to the entire SC catalog in the US (which Criterion may not have been interested in and thus lost the rights to). They released a few notable films on BD but then dropped out (poor sales or whatever). They do have a major business relationship at least for theatrical releases, with a partnership where SC is handling the release of, among other titles, The Hunger Games franchise in Europe.
Maybe what SC feels is that with a region free (hopefully, for the locked folks) UK release, they'll make money even if it's not released by the US licensee. Last edited by ravenus; 01-26-2016 at 11:55 AM. |

The Lionsgate/StudioCanal deal is still ongoing. Lionsgate is the worst, they have pretty much stopped releasing Blu-rays of StudioCanal's classic catalog titles (I think That Obscure Object of Desire, released three years ago, was the last one they released) and many of them are now only available as Amazon exclusive MOD DVD-Rs.

I bought a copy, but soon heard it wasn't a great transfer so put off watching it. I sold my copy recently having never watched it, so will be going into this fresh. Looking forward to it! I hope they go all-out with extras and packaging for this one...

I bought the UK DVD many years ago and it has sat on my shelf unwrapped - I'd forgotten why until I looked: English audio only
![]() ![]() There's a good doc on the disk though, worth keeping it for (Chris Marker's AK - The Making of Ran). |

I have the StudioCanal x Optimum release, I actually watched it and the film for the first time a few weeks ago. What is supposed to be so bad about this version?

I think the colors are wrong or edge enhancement. On my TV it looked good when I saw it. Of course this new edition will be much better. Still the BD looked better than the Criterion DVD.
