4K digitally restored version of the film "Ran" directed by Akira Kurosawa comes out in Blu-ray box set. Comes with a bonus DVD featuring a making-of documentary "AK" by Chris Marker (75 min.), interview with Mieko Harada (subject to change), the film making-of (88 min.), trailers for Akira Kurosawa's three films "The Quiet Duel," "Rashomon," and "Madadayo" (11 min. approx.). Also comes with a 24-page booklet featuring interview with Masato Hara and more. *The DVD disc is encoded for region 2 (Japan, Europe, and Middle East), and no subtitles are included.
Special Feature / Bonus Track: "Ran" teaser & trailers, audio commentary
Those are the extras on the Japanese disc. Hoping the UK also gets this.

Looks like this is shaping up to be a great release. Gonna need to get a red case though to go with that cover art.

Can't wait to own and watch this again... However I am not a fan of the artwork. I'd prefer the Japanese 4K BD art.

Well, the worst thing is that it's simply an SD upscale. On top of that it's not even a good upscale job. And the colours are faded and it's riddled with edge enhancement. It's simply one of the worst BDs I've ever seen (yes, I'm sure there are plenty worse but I haven't seen them).

Glad to see they've got the same extras from the previous disc (the ones I have bolded). I reckon this could be it for extras...now I wonder if they'll be in HD or SD - apparently it's a 2-disc set, but will it be BD or DVD?

I have the current standard blue case one, is this just the same in fancier packaging? With bad image quality still?

I know its not the upcoming 4K one.

That's the original StudioCanal Collection version (2009), with the same disc as the Amaray edition released a year later (2010). I don't think there's any difference between the two discs, but I could be wrong.

... and I assume all the extras on both UK and French discs are 50kHz encoded --- will have to wait for the Criterion / US release later in the year ... shit

Nice. Preordered at 17.99. Already have the SC blu and Criterion dvd, but it's not like you can have too many copies of Ran.

I do kind of want the Japanese version just for the case but *that* seems excessive.

They weren't for the previous disc. There's zero indication of the US getting this.

Why shouldn't we wait for the inevitable UHD combo pack release?
Will it be years before that happens?
