I really did not expect the free upgrade to be announced. This is a very nice surprise.

edit: "Everything you’ve purchased from iTunes, along with your current rentals, shows up in your Apple TV app library. And if an HD title in your library is released in 4K HDR, it automatically updates for free." So yes, upgrades only if a UHD title exists. Good for recent and future releases for sure. Older titles you'll have to hope they get a 4K release. Last edited by bru20; 09-12-2017 at 09:34 PM. |

Now I know I made the right choice when redeeming all the Fox codes through iTunes!

This is devastating news for Vudu. They want to charge a full $30 price for UHD even if you already own HDX. Maybe they will be forced to follow suit. And to think, iTunes codes are usually at least half the cost of UV.
I wonder if this applies to future Disney movies as well. edit: I guess the above post answers that Does iTunes not give the option of which version to watch? If you own UHD you can choose to watch HD or SD if you want? |

edit: Upscaling I guess for non 4K movies. I'm done until there is more info. Last edited by bru20; 09-12-2017 at 09:45 PM. |

Amazon and ULTRA have a hefty section of 4K titles from Sony that isn't available elsewhere. VUDU has a hefty section of titles from WB that isn't available elsewhere (plus, assorted titles from Paramount and Lionsgate that aren't available elsewhere) Now, imagine a single storefront that could (potentially) have all the the titles available from FandangoNOW, Amazon/Ultra, and VUDU? Plus, potentially others. There is a storefront (UltraFlix) that used to have a great deal of Paramount 4K titles that isn't currently available anywhere else. Oh, I know that all of my movies won't be given the UHD treatment. But, it's idea of it that's so exciting and the fact that Apple was able to pull this off.

Upgrading existing purchases is massive and is going to get them instant significant inroads and customer loyalty as a 4K HDR streaming service.
Very clever move IMHO. |

Not really sure what they "pulled off" just yet. This could actually end up costing more to users. Supposedly (online sources) they were negotiating $20 UHD sales. If that is the minimum studios will take, and iTunes says HD gives UHD now, then didn't a lot of HD prices just increase? It all depends on what happens. It could be that $9.99 and $14.99 and any other price below $20 will no longer be available for HD titles. It appears they "pulled off" a UHD price reductions from studios, but they also could have "pulled off" a price increase on HD titles. We will have to see how this all shakes out. Maybe they only have two options to buy now, SD and UHD/HD... Regardless, it's interesting news.

As if I needed another reason to simultaneously be happy about my decision to switch to iTunes and kick myself for not investing in their system sooner.
Will try to preorder two of the new Apple TVs (one for family room and one for master bedroom), but will be satisfied if I get to preorder at least one for the family room. What I do wonder is, what happens if Movies Anywhere becomes a real thing? Will Apple update all those imported HD movies to UHD (where applicable of course)? Has there been a date for when 4k movies will be available for purchase? I can't find one but I'm assuming it will be the same day as the new Apple TV releases? Last edited by tobz; 09-13-2017 at 12:21 AM. |
