If Arrow’s announcement about their release didn’t mention whether the transfer was new and was several paragraphs about how amazing their inclusion of the four different colors of the opening sequence was, you can be sure they’d be made fun of.

It was shot in color, accidentally released once on blu-ray in black and white (and recalled), and there are continuing arguments about whether it was intended to be true sepia or yellow-tinted. People can have their opinions of Shameless, and I certainly tend to agree, but lets be fair - if Arrow included all 4 of these openings they would be praised for it. Because it's Shameless doing it, people are using it as another reason to ridicule them.

I think it has more to do with the fact that they’re restoring the opening of the movie in 4 versions (the black and white version isn’t even necessary because the film was never meant to have a b&w opening - that was a mistake Arrow made with their first pressing) and not actually remastering the film itself.

I'm not talking about the fact that the main film hasn't been remastered. Obviously that's a huge disappointment, though it's not a surprise. So obviously they're focusing on the one big selling point they have for this - the alternate opening titles. I'm simply saying I see no reason why people should ridicule them for putting some attention into the opening title sequence. I'm glad they did.

I am just guessing here, but maybe it is because it seems just a tad ridiculous to use SO much energy and space on variations of the opening titles, when only one or two of them really can be said to be original, and the fact that nobody ever really requested them.

I mean, until now, I can literally not recall a single instance of any fan anywhere writing about how it would be great to have all color variations of the opening titles available.

And it seems ridiculous, too, because all everyone has been asking for is a new transfer of the film itself.

But of course you also are right. Shameless are putting so much attention to the opening titles because it (sadly) seems to be one of their very few selling points.

I agree, there only needed to be two. The original theatrical version attached to the feature, and the colour version as a special feature. Anything else would be wrong and revisionist, and if the DoP really wants to redo the timing of the opening, then they should commit to retiming the main opening and, hey how about colour correcting the whole film in a new restoration even if there isn't a new scan.

Apparently so. Presumably the recent French release was also from a new 2K scan performed in Italy so the Shameless release should be the same new 2K scan.

Very sorry for the delay in getting back to you all on this. Our version of The Beyond was restored in Italy from a new 2K scan of the original camera negative, with additional restoration and colour-grading carried out in the UK.

Seeing as scans from Italy seem to have a tendency to be yellower than yellow, god knows what we get
