I really want to see the documentary, but I hate what I'm seeing of what Jackson has done to the film...I'm torn. It sounds like this is really worth watching, but I also don't want people to think I condone these sorts of shitty remastering processes.
EDIT: I found this comparison shot and actually laughed out loud: [Show spoiler] Whatever they did to the color is also really off-putting here. Look at how much more accurate the green and especially the red colors look versus what they changed them to. I'm not sure how the windows went from clear to teal, but given that there is no teal in the old shot, I have to conclude it's revisionist, too. There are even inconsistencies in the shots about what is brighter and what is dimmer from shot to shot, like the cardboard box and the guy cut off on the right hand side. [Show spoiler]

So I suppose my skepticism around They Shall Not Grow Old (which I still haven’t seen) had some validity, but at least that wasn’t pretending to be the real image, with the colourisation process.
If anything I’m glad the theatrical component was scrapped as could you imagine watching that amount of DNR on a cinema screen? |

As for the theatrical component, the rooftop concert is getting a one-off IMAX showing and now it makes sense as to why that rooftop footage in Get Back suddenly reverts to a 1.33-ish aspect when for the previous 7 hours they were happy to crop (and tilt and scan it!) to 1.78. I think it was shot mostly on 35 which is why even with all those same "processes" applied it looks far betterer than the 16 stuff. Still verr unnatural, but easier on the eye. |

Really? They did it in house? That's great news...as long as it's a proper 4K transfer from the negative and not one of turbine's weird AI upscale/regrain jobbies. (Yes I know, I'm moaning about PJ murderising the grain but also moaning about turbine adding fake grain/detail, whaddayagonnado?)

For "temporarily out of stock" read "hasn't been released yet." The Lovers! film, Stage Fright - they're all temporarily out of stock. You know maybe they'll get some stock in when somebody bothers to magic the things into existence - this is always possible. Donkeys. Blithering cocking donkeys. |

I quite honestly hated the way this looked, I was visiting family for Christmas and watched it on their TV, so at first I thought it was that, but I did the time honoured thing of adjusting all the TV settings when they were out of the room, but it still looked rubbish! At least now seeing this thread I know I wasn't going insane...
One the plus side, it really is an interesting film, and I know there was 'so much footage' that he couldn't make it shorter, but it really was a bit too long. The last hour was brilliant though, all of those grumpy old men in bowler hats moaning to the police while everyone else was loving it. Felt sorry for that one copper "it's not on is it?" he knew he had no chance ![]() |
