Picking up where Volume One left off, this sophomore collection of Hong Kong cinema classics draws together many of the best films from the final years of the Shaw Brothers studio, proving that while the end was nigh, these merchants of martial arts mayhem weren’t going to go out without a fight! Armed with stunning special features and ravishing new restorations, this boxset is even bigger and bolder than the last one. We begin with kung fu master Lau Kar-leung’s instant classic The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, in which his adoptive brother Gordon Liu achieved overnight stardom as the young man who unexpectedly finds spiritual enlightenment on the path to vengeance; Lau and Liu followed the original with two comically inventive sequels, Return to the 36th Chamber and Disciples of the 36th Chamber, both included here. Already established as a genius at blending dazzling action with physical comedy, Lau himself plays the lead role in the hilarious Mad Monkey Kung Fu, coupled here with Lo Mar’s underrated Five Superfighters. Next, we once again meet Chang Cheh’s basher boy band the Venom Mob in no less than four of their best-loved team-ups: Invincible Shaolin, The Kid with the Golden Arm, Magnificent Ruffians and culminating in the all-star Ten Tigers of Kwangtung, co-starring Ti Lung and Fu Sheng. After Lau brings us perhaps his best high-kicking comedy with My Young Auntie, a playful star vehicle for his real-life muse Kara Hui, we see Shaw Brothers fully embracing Eighties excess in our strangest double feature yet: Wong Jing’s breathtakingly wild shoot-‘em-up Mercenaries from Hong Kong, and Kuei Chih-hung’s spectacularly unhinged black magic meltdown The Boxer’s Omen. Technically speaking, Ritrovata scanned and restored the new 2K restorations in the last set, while the color grading was done by R3store in the UK.

I disagree — this is a fantastic set full of classics. There’s nothing not to love about this set. This treasure trove is going to upgrade a lot of ratty old DVDs for me.

Easy pass or at least wait for price drop.

If they would have included to kill a mastermind or uncut avenging eagle, different story.

If you call disciples of 36th chamber, mercenaries, 10 tigers, barefooted kid as classics..well, whatever floats your boat.

You forgot to mention 36th Chamber, Boxer’s Omen, and My Young Auntie, all classics. As for Kid having a “decent DVD and German BR”, I couldn’t care less about that. It’ll be great to have included in this set. Nope, nothing not to love here.

Whatever you prefer. But these fair amount not to love here. Line up in Shawscope1 was perhaps too superb, this pales easily. Hopefully book is ok but imo definitely is not pre-order stuff but rather waiting price drop.

Martial arts of shaolin is OK but if copyrights were not in limbo rather have boxset of all 3 movies than Lau Kar Leung directed movie here here.

I sure hope this sells well so we get part 3 with perhaps chu yuan and earlier chang cheh flicks but atm look beter stick with dvd releases and buy magnificent ruffians german br.

I am surprised there aren't new scans of My Young Auntie and the two 36th Chamber sequels. Especially with My Young Auntie being one of the highlights of the set in my opinion. It is also too bad that they weren't able to pair My Young Auntie with The Lady is the Boss. Otherwise I am really excited for the box-set.

I would have hoped for new restorations of MARTIAL ARTS OF SHAOLIN and THE BARE-FOOTED KID. The frame cuts on MAOS are so extreme in places that the music on the soundtrack jumps like crazy.

Saw TEN TIGERS OF KWANTUNG a few month ago and found it to be a rather boring and confusing film. After about half an hour I was completely lost of what the plot was all about, the dozens of characters, who wanted what and who fought against whom.

Story is actually very easy to follow but when saw dubbed dutch vhs was too quite confused. With subs it makes lot more sense. Pity production troubles, certainly what director had originally in mind would be superior compared to what we have now. I still think it is good one.

Slightly off topic, but I don't suppose anyone knows how many of these boxsets they're planning on? There's a load of 88 Shaw films I've got on my list and I've held off after they had Mighty Peking Man on Vol:1 so I'm trying to avoid duplicates.
