![]() ![]() Vol. 2 does look a great set - I noticed it mentions a new scan of 36th Chamber, was the one in the HK boxset scanned in 4K years ago? |

Maybe it is about what materials are still available. Could be that some of the original negatives have fallen victim to vinegar syndrome or other fatal deterioration in the last couple of years.

Mad Monkey Kung Fu will most likely have to be cut over here for animal cruelty. Some quite unpleasant material in it if memory serves. The film would play better without this stuff though, at least imo.

Except the way you have to drag the playing surface of the discs across the packaging to get them in and out. That's definitely something not to love.
That's what I usually do with awfully packaged disc-scratching sets, transfer the discs to a proper box. However, I have no need for the CDs and I am tired of these useless big boxes piling up so if Arrow release normally packaged regular editions of these sets, I'll happily buy them. Otherwise, I'll spend my money on something else. |

The UK VHS was uncut, I think. The BBFC site makes no mention of cuts, but then that site is useless.

Intriguing. Perhaps it'll be complete after all then? One fairly lengthy sequence looked a bit rough to me when I watched the region 1 dvd (which I sold, so I can't check it now). Who knows with the BBFC these days?

I wish there were somewhat fewer films that had been released before, although the new scans and restorations add appeal. The 36th Chamber films have received numerous previous releases, for instance, although apparently the 4k scan of the first film is excellent. Mad Monkey Kung Fu had a German Blu-ray release, but without any subtitles and with only Chinese and German audio options. Invincible Shaolin, The Kid With the Golden Arm, Magnificent Ruffians and Ten Tigers of Kwan Tung have all received German releases, all except for Invincible Shaolin with English subtitles. The Bare-Footed kid had a French release (no English subtitles) and Martial Arts of Shaolin a particularly bad (in terms of PQ) German release. Still, including a so-so film like The Bare-Footed Kid that already has a previous release seems unfortunate to me (it's likely to tie in to their Johnny To releases).
Going by popular opinion (gleemed from Letterboxd, IMDB and Kung fu forums), the line-up has 4 all time-classics: The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Mad Monkey Kung Fu, My Young Auntie and The Boxer's Omen. Five Superfighters and Mercenaries from Hong Kong are lesser known films with some fans who claim they are top shelf. Martial Arts of Shaolin has great Lau Kar Leung choreography, especially in its amazing finale, and the young Jet Li, but suffers from a weak middle. The four Venom films included are generally considered middle of the road, with only The Kid with the Golden Arm sometimes considered one of their best. Take from that what you will. It’s still a definite pre-order from me. The extras line-up is especially impressive. |

Melon Farmers list a total of 28 seconds missing from it. So presume that the UK release will have the same or similar cuts to it. I just hope that the disc will be similar to the cut one in BOTH the Spaghetti Western & Poliziotteschi sets & play UNCUT if BD player is set to Region A.

I already have the 36th Chamber trilogy on BD from Celestial, and I also have KWTGA and Magnificent Ruffians on German Blu. I lean more towards Shaws 60s/70's swordplay and early 70's kung fu, so this set doesn't grab me as much as the first one did, but there are still enough titles I like for me to pick it up.
Looking forward to it. |
