Default What are your favorite video game genres?

What genre of game do you like to play the most? Do you prefer third person, or first person? Platformer in 2d or 3D? RPG or Survival horror? Speak up, and let's hear it!

Survival Horror has always been my favorite genre. I don't know what it is, but I feel like when I play a good survival horror game, I'm satisfied. Probably because of the amount of skill it takes to actually make a good one. It requires the ability to make pitch perfect difficulty. You want to feel helpless, but at the same time capable. It needs to be scary, but not enough for you to not want to stop playing. When you get a survival horror game that hits the right notes, it's my sweet spot!

Ill play pretty much anything although post 16 bit my sports time has significantly dwindled. RPG's, platformers, horror and driving games are my go to.

I love a good RPG, but find that a good hack and slash loot hunting game is still my favorite.

My tastes have been broadening over the last few years. I love FPS's, RPG's, Survival horror, MMO's/MMORPG's, MOBA's, and third person shooters in particular.

I think RPGs, adventure games, and arcade games are the most "graphics-proof" and "technology-proof" genres throughout the gaming history, and thus I believe the most popular and long-lasting. This is attested by the many "retro graphics" versions that are still being made and enjoyed today as well as the more technologically advanced titles. RPG and adventure are mainly about storytelling, which can often be accomplished without cutting-edge technology. And arcade games, by its nature, don't often need good tech either. The proliferation of cellphones and tablets and other handhelds has also driven arcade's popularity to new heights.

Action games, otoh, NEED good technology to pull off. That's why action games before Doom are pretty much considered museum pieces now. Action subgenres like FPS, TPS, survival horror, strategy, flight sims, sports games, etc., all need good technology. Tech advances like 3D acceleration, Direct 3D, network gaming, wireless gaming, and the fortunes of companies like Nvidia and AMD, were all mainly the results of the technological needs of the action genre. About the only action subgenre that doesn't need good tech is, of course, arcade.

Turn-based strategy games may not need great tech to run, but, to me, it is a genre where good-looking graphics have always been part of the selling point. Unlike RPGs, strategy games rely more on the visuals of the game. You can play purely text-based RPGs or adventures, but not strategy.

Even casual games like card games, casino games, etc., are often reliant on good tech such as online gameplay, social features, and good graphics.

I guess my whole point is that the popularity of various genres has been largely determined by how much gaming technology needed by a particular genre, and some needs it more than others.

I adore online puzzle games and now I often play such games . I like solving different kinds of riddles and mysteries. These games help to develop mental skills and abilities. Moreover, they are the best way to escape from everyday routine.

I donít choose based on genre, I choose based on games that look interesting.

My favourite games include:

Uncharted
The Last Of Us
Rocket League
LittleBigPlanet
NHL
Rock Band
SSX
You Donít Know Jack
Portal
Heavy Rain
Magic Orbz
Final Fantasy
Rag Doll Kung Fu

As you can see... not much in the way of genre specific.

Fighting Games - both the 1-on-1 'Mortal Kombat' type stuff and the sidescrolling beat 'em up types like 'Streets of Rage'.

Racecar games

I'm kind of with Petra on this one. I don't buy specific genres and although I do enjoy some of the franchises, I usually pick something up for a good or great story. If that's solid I know I'll enjoy the game despite it being repetitive to others with better memories than I.
