First, Paramount seems to be enthusiastic about showing off the 3D, starting back in April at CinemaCon. (https://www.indiewire.com/2019/04/ge...ps-1202055941/) And every article I've read about the film has made a point to mention the 3D along with the high frame rate.

Second, Ang Lee is one of the few directors with enough clout to get a studio to take a chance. Billy Lynn's 4K/3D/60fps release was something few films have received on home media, even from such a tech-minded company as Sony, and I'm guessing that's out of either contractual obligation or deference to Lee.

Anyway, this is just one Ang Lee & 3D fan trying to be optimistic.
Ang Lee has given interviews stating that his 3D films are made for seeing theatrically and is clearly less fussed about home formats than we are.

My advice is to go see this when it comes out in cinemas because, as we all know, Paramount appear to no longer be interested in releasing 3D Blu-rays even for their most comercially successful movies.

A lot of good buzz for the film and 3D, after a NY screening:

Quote:
Just saw the final cut of Ang Lees #GeminiMan and its probably the only movie Id ever say absolutely must be seen in 3D (and 4K, if possible). Ive never seen anything like it it felt like I was inside the movie.
Quote:
Just saw Ang Lees #GeminiMan and its legit. Old Will Smith vs young Will Smith equals a visually visceral experience thats absolutely wild to watch at times. Again, Ang Lee delivers bold, unique action thats on par w/ the best. See it in 3D, for sure.
Quote:
Vibrating from excitement after seeing GEMINI MAN, it uses 120FPS and 3D to create some of the most exciting action sequences I've seen in years. Happy to see Ang Lee return to action, the choreography feels intense because it looks so realistic
Quote:
Ang Lees #GeminiMan is a huge breakthrough for 120FPS presentation. Action sequences are breathtaking in the format. Will Smiths winning performance shows the level of scrutiny a real movie star can stand up to. If you dont see it in theaters youre missing a true experience.

Just saw #GeminiMan. Ang Lee makes a compelling case for 3D and high-frame rates, particularly when it comes to action sequences. Don't see the 2D version. He admits that the technology is in its early stages, but it works better here than in #BillyLynn and deserves to be seen.
Quote:
Just saw #GeminiMan and its wiiiiiiild. The young version of Wil Smith is incredible, plus some truly beautiful action sequences and a really great performance by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The only 3D movie Ill ever endorse.
Quote:
Also, we got to see the film in 120 FPS 3D. It's clear and bright, as any good 3D should be, but doesn't push the envelope like Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk did.
Interesting.

Very few lucky ones will be able to see in 120fps 3D... most of us will have to settle for 60fps 3D.

Stated that it was shot in 3D+. Haven't heard that before.

Sounds like 3D+ is just 3D but fullscreen format instead of the letterbox. Ang always uses extreme clarity and nice colour in his films as well just like Life of Pi and Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Will be interesting to see how this translates to extremely fast-paced scenes though.

Translated from IMAX.at:

Quote:
3D + is an evolutionary digital format with a frame rate of 60 frames per second - more than double the traditional film frame rate - and provides the audience with a more immersive, immersive 3D experience.

With 60 projected frames per second previously generated from a master originally created at 120 frames per second
The frame rate approaches the human eye more than ever before, really putting the viewer in the center of the action. More images mean more depth, so that the viewer can see and experience much more in the picture.

Through this enhanced combination of performance and action, 3D + allows filmmakers to complete the emotional depth and visual presentation exactly as they intend. This evolution of visual storytelling provides the audience with the most impressive cinematic experience currently possible in a movie theater.

Shooting and presenting in high frame rates has the added benefit of clearing up one of Lee’s bugbears with 3D which is the murkiness of viewing through glasses.

“It’s the 3D which remains important to Ang,” his editor says. “I always cut in 3D because when you are making a 3D picture you think make different decisions than you would in 2D. Instead of imagining what the 3D would be like, I’d rather work in it from the start.”

“We might start out a scene with the characters within the frame and then start to bring them forward ever so slowly into our space as the scene progresses. You never want to go so far as have the audience really aware of what you’re doing but it’s surprising how far you can go push it without it being a problem.”
Quote:
If Sony failed to understand the technology or support Billy Lynn’s with any kind of wide HFR release, Paramount believes it may have a hit on its hands.

The film is being distributed in versions including a top-of-the-range 4K 3D 240 (120 per eye) and extreme brightness of 28 foot-lamberts per eye across up to 100 new screens in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Screens with Dolby Vision will be able to show 120 2K at 14fl brightness and the main worldwide release is likely to be at 2K 3D 60.

It's possible Ang Lee, if his prior films are available as intended in 3D on blu ray 3D, could convince Paramount or the studio in charge to release this on blu ray 3D as well.

This film looks entertaining. I'm surprised it's an Ang Lee film, but then I remember he did Hulk too.

Why doesnt show the thread title "no 3D Blu-Ray"?
Is think its sure because of Paramounts release politics.
I hate Paramount for that.

Hmmm some of that CG is fairly wonky but i certainly appreciate the ambition in trying to portray the action in such a way that doesn't require cutting to a stuntman etc.

At the moment the home release formats haven't been confirmed. if a bunch of 2D-only releases turn up for pre-order with no 3D option, that's when the thread title will change.

Hopefully Paramount won't be so stupid as to issue a natively-shot 3D movie in 2D only, but it wouldn't be the first time...
