Paint/carpet suggestions?

I'm in the middle of a home theater build; I've outsourced most of it to the local A/V outfitter (wiring, Atmos installation, A/V rack installation, etc.), but they're not handling painting and carpeting. It's a standard finished basement, but with light colors that I'd like to darken. If anyone has suggestions on carpeting and paint in the dark grey range, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

It's going to be difficult for somebody else to choose the carpet and the color of paint for you. You will have to pick whatever you like because, you're the one who's going to be there to look at it. What I can suggest is that you pick the carpet first, and then choose the color of paint to match.

I went with grey carpet and a dark blue and grey paint for my theater room. You can see the pics in my signature. I’m really happy with how it turned out. Also, a flat black paint for the ceiling and wall with my projector screen worked out really well.

You don't need it to be super dark in terms of paint...look at my gallery as an example, but you don't want it really bright either. I can't comment in terms of carpet as my floor is concrete epoxy...

I went with all black, and it turned out far far better than I could have imagined. My room went from light brown using a Plasma to Black using OLED.

Prior to the change, I was using black cloth on the walls & ceiling to help with the contrast. I decided to get rid of the cloth and just paint walls black. I hated my first attempt at having the ceiling black, because it lit up a bit from the TV light. What I have now actually blends the black bars with the surrounding walls.

It's pretty cool not to notice the aspect ratio from some movies because of the blend.

But, honestly this effect only happens with HDR content when all the lights are out. Non-HDR content does seem to have a slight washed out blackness to the boarders.

I still need to put up some pictures of my basement home theater. However, I painted most of my main viewing area a dark gray color called Shadow Mountain by Behr. It's a very Middle Earth/Mordor (Lol) name to me and it turned out great. I painted the area behind my screen black and that was Carbon by Behr as well. I'll eventually get some pics up. Best of luck and enjoy the process as its a lot of hard work, but well worth it.

I went dark on the walls and ceiling but light on the carpet. Similar in a previous version of my theatre where as my first version was dark on walls and floor, I find the room more pleasant to sit in with some lightness and the carpet is the place to do that imo.

The problem with your theatre is it is just an entirely different level of class! Man I love your theatre!!!

For me, the more light I removed from the equation, the more I appreciated the setting.

HDR was the crown that made me smile until my jaws hurt. In my basement, when the screen goes dark you can't see anything but wall and when something comes on the screen is when the WOW factor happens..

That possibly could be too dark for some, but I love it.

I went with black paint on the wall of the screen, and about 3 feet in on the ceiling and walls. Then grey screen and grey/wine colored walls back to the pj. The light colored carpet I have was basic color that came when I built the house (the pj and paint job came about 6 years later). I got the idea just looking at pictures of pj HT setups people on this site had posted. The wine colored took an unreal number of coats, don't do that.

My favourite paint is Zinsser, they make a lot of specialist paints and primers for stained or water damaged surfaces and all are top quality. Scrubbable Interior Matt in RAK 7046 is a good colour for walls if you don't want black. Distributed in the USA by Rustoleum

Carpet. Avoid polyproplylene, polyamide, polyester, they wear quickly. Wool is good but can be susceptible to moths and other insects. Nylon is my pick, very durable but get a good quality that's static treated and use a good underlay. Consider a rug or capet offcut made into a rug over a hardwood floor
