Day for night shots have never looked right to me! Where do all those shadows come from? A really bright moon?(LOL) If you really wanted it to look natural, one would end up with a film of a black cat in a coal mine. It's really an even worse problem in color due to color film's limited latitude. Early Technicolor didn't even try to use day for night; the scripts were written so almost nothing took place at night. As time went on with various improvements in film photo chemistry it got better, but over the years and we have come to accept the inherent limitations. Just like we have learned to accept certain cinemagraphic tools to create non real time intervals. (i.e., fade out ------ fade in, creating hours of imaginary time.)
