Unhappy Playstation/Onkyo Receiver/75 Sony 4k TV Issue! HELP Please!!

(if I posted in wrong place mods, just trying to get help)

Hello guys -

So here is all I have setup:

- Sony 4K 75inch TV (sony xbr75x850d)
- Sony PS2 (Plays PS1 games original fat console)
- I have my PS2 connected with Component cables to the Onkyo receiver for better quality.
- Using OEM Sony brand original Component Cables
- I have the Onkyo tx nr636 receiver

(PLEASE keep in mind its not the PS2 console with issues at all because I tested it with a old CRT and it all works fine)

So I play old PS2 games just fine no issues at all. But the moment I pop in a PS1 game and it loads, then a couple of secs later I get like weird green and blue blocks on screen, like if the Receiver/TV doesn't like the down conversion of resolution for the PS1 games.

I noticed that the TV/receiver stays at 480i rather than going down to 240i/p for the PS1 games, I think that is what is causing my issue if I am not mistaken, but I could be wrong.

So then I did some testing and would enter the onkyo settings menu while on PS1 game menu of Metal Gear solid and exit several times without making any changes and next thing you know the screen showed the game fine... So weird. Did the same thing with the PS2 rebooting several times and once out of like 5 reboots it finally came up with metal gear on screen and not the green/blue blocks.

Has anyone experienced this? not many people still play ps1 games hahaha. Is there a setting I am missing on the receiver or TV that I am not selecting? Is there a down grade to 240i setting?

HELP!!!!

I'm wondering if using an old phat Spiderman PS3 to play those games (I mention that one so you can also play your PS2 games on it) would fix your problems. Sounds like a step-down issue to me and I'm wondering if the newer hardware on the PS3 would mitigate the issue.

I actually just found this thread and seems to be the issue you're having.

And this one.

Thank you. So yea the issue is my TV and Receiver not know the 240p resolution... this sucks.. I wish there was a way around not having to purchase anything else. Its so weird how sometimes the picture appears and then 80% of the time it does not and TV always stays at 480i resolution. I wonder if I use RCA cables just to load the ps1 games would it work any better?

It's been a while since I've seen the back of a PS2 but could you use just the video portion of component cables to your display and then use optical to the receiver for just the sound? That would take the receiver out of the down convert scenario.

Good thinking but I can't do that unfortunately. I have a closet with all wires and all equipment, then my TV is about 20-25 feet away from closet hung on the wall. I made it this way when my wife and I built the house so that there were not tables under the tv/cables etc... and its all hidden in a closet.

At this point then it seems an upconverter like a XRGB-mini Framemeister is all you could do. That's a little pricey for one console though.
