Default Why didn't Sony make the PlayStation Classic better?

Like probably most people, I was perplexed by the PlayStation Classic's 20 games.

Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil 2 and 3, Silent Hill, and other classics were blatantly missing. Instead, it included many titles that are mediocre.

The main menu lacked music, and had hardly any options. I think the lack of main menu music was what really did it for me. If they couldn't even add catchy music to the main menu, they must care little about the system, I thought.

The PS Classic is plagued by bizarre choices on Sony's part. You have Twisted Metal, but no Twisted Metal 2 (one of the best Twisted Metal games). People don't want to see that. They want to have the superior sequel to a series as well, to help complete the collection. The same can be said for Rainbow Six. Rogue Spear is a superior sequel, absent from the system, despite being on the PS. I think many people would've been pleased to see Rogue Spear there, from a completionist and collector standpoint at the least.

PS Classic does have bright parts. It has Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 1, Grand Theft Auto 1, Syphon Filter, Tekken 3, Final Fantasy VII, Twisted Metal 1, etc. But the system is too lacking and bizarre otherwise. It should have the best Tomb Raider games on PS, and all the rest I mentioned.

What happened? How come it's so lacking? Is this because of licensing issues? Or did Sony just not care enough to make it great? Was it rushed or something? The NES Classic and SNES Classic are rightly praised, because they pretty much represent the best of the NES and SNES. What happened with the PS Classic?

The only thing that come to mind is it could be a rights issue, maybe the publisher of the game wanted to much money for the rights. I can only hazard a guess as to why Crash Bandicoot was not on the PS Classic but it would be that Crash Bandicoot The N'Sane Trilogy was coming out for the PS4 and X-Box One around that time.

The games are not even remotely the issue. The controller is garbage and the performance is terrible. Even if had the best games it would still be poop.

They should have to put more games collection to it, as there is no optical storage on the console, it only had 20 pre-builtin games they have chosen the best titles but not really they should have made 50 games collection so the buyer can play a wide variety of games.

Unlike Nintendo with their classic consoles, Sony doesn't own most of Playstation's best games. They had to license each game from the publisher. Therefore including more than 20 games would have drastically increased the price.

If the emulation at least would ran smoothly. Then I would not even complain about the game selection. Because you "can do something" in that case.

Licensing.

Nintendo consoles are known for their first party games, so they had access to all of them.

While PS1 was a success because of the 3rd party games it had, which are much harder/expensive than 1st part.

Gran turismo is my only question mark.

Because Sony saw it as a potential quick cash grab and didnt invest a lot of time and effort into developing it.

Personally, I think all the mini classic consoles can . The crucial error was not making it possible to add games beyond the ones built in. There should have been a downloadable game store or a series of micro-carts containing sets of games.

Why didn't they release more PS2 Classics for PS4? They didn't even release some they rated.

Why didn't they port/remaster any Ratchet & Clank games to PS4 after the reboot was the fastest selling in the series? PS4 only has one in the end when Vita had 4. Crazy.

Why didn't they do an inFamous collection?

The list goes on.

They sadly don't care about old games.

You can easily hack them now and put 100s of games on it. Thousands if you count the other systems you can put on it too. Pathetic display by Sony for a mini classic console but it's irrelevant now, being able to mod it. Even in a new way now with Project Eris. Homebrew community is still supporting it with all kinds of stuff. Well worth the price of one now, if you can find one for a decent price and have access to a computer to hack it, which is easy.

This is definitely the craziest part. All of them have been hacked (except TG-16 Mini, still waiting) and the fan community fixed the problems and added their favorite missing games, wouldn't have been better if Sony linked it to PSN or something?

Exactly. $$$ There's no emotional decisions behind capitalist corporations as some seem to think, They weigh it against fiscal losses and gains and supply demand, sourcing and manufacturing. Then price it as such.

They did make it better, there is a thumb drive out there with 300 PS1 games, along with Nintendo and Sega emulation.

Also, this thing was so rushed that Sony didn't realize or care that several of the games were the inferior PAL versions with worse performance (because the PAL versions of games were made to work on European TVs with 50 hertz [compared to the 60 hertz TVs in America]). This can be changed via connecting a usb keyboard and entering a debug menu with the press of the escape key and choosing the region, but the fact Sony themselves didn't have all the games set at NTSC to begin with shows just how little they cared about this.

The gaming community is able to design their own FPGA projects that run "program cores", meaning 1:1 emulation on a scale that games and systems can operate as if they are the real deal as opposed to something that has to work based on another operating system or system on a chip like the retron does. When Sony and other companies do it, they run with the same emulation routine with all the fallaways and limitations in place as they do when they force you to re-purchase their games on newer systems, so nothing is native about anything.

If communities can do it better and even allow you to run the actual physical media to boot, then it's an understatement that the industry needs to get with the times. I'm seeing people run SegaCD games off a special cartridge through just the Genesis alone and it's considered the perfect alternative to hunting down an add-on.

The PS Classic was such a disappointment. When they first announced it, and I saw it had the original d-pad only controller, what I thought they were going for was a collection of games from that 1994-1997 era before the dual-shock. So games like Final Fantasy VII and the original Resident Evil made sense. They could have also included other great titles like Crash Bandicoot, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Tomb Raider I and/or II, etc.

But not only did the game lineup feel lackluster, but I just don't understand why they went with the original d-pad only controller for games like Metal Gear Solid. I don't want to play Metal Gear or later games like Ridge Racer without the dualshock and analog controls. It was just stupid.

They should have double down on this project. They were too scared about losing more money through licenses than the possible profits and ended up with a sloppy product.

Atleast MGS is on PC now, hit me hard with nostalgia.
