One reason, maybe the major reason, my family and I haven't bought a PlayStation in years, is because I don't see FPS's on them.
I don't have a problem with third-person games per say, but FPS is my favorite genre. It seems like PlayStation is almost a third-person only console. The PS controller doesn't seem well-suited for FPS, neither. What are your thoughts on FPS games on PlayStation consoles? Is Xbox and its controller suppose to be king of FPS or something? And PlayStation king of third-person games? |

Aside from Halo, it has the major FPS. Outlast trilogy was on there as well. I dabble in FPS if it has a decent solo story. I don’t like online.
On PS3/4 I have played Battlefield coD Duke Nukem Doom Outlast Dead Rising? Resident Evil 7 Wolfenstein Medal of Honor GTA V in first person mode for a while all seemed well enough. I have an x360, only bought it for goW, left4dead, forza I’m a 3rd person fan. New age FPS give me a headache if I play for long. I still like old Doom, Duke Nukem, Alien Trilogy, etc from PS1 and Win 95 era |

There's been plenty of FPS games on the PS. Played my fair share of them and never had an issue with the Dualshock controllers.
FPS games I've seen for the PS are: Available on the PS3: 007: Legends Aliens vs Predator Battlefield: Bad Company Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Bioshock 1, 2, Infinite Borderlands 1, 2 Bulletstorm Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1, 2, 3, Advanced Warfare, and likely more Call of Duty: Black Ops 1, 2, 3, maybe more Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (includes Escape From Butcher Bay too) Crysis 1 (pretty sure it was on the PSN at one point), 2, 3 Dead Island and DI: Riptide Doom 3 (BFG edition, comes all the DLCs with the original 2 as well) Duke Nukem Forever Fallout 3, New Vegas Far Cry 2, 3 GoldenEye Reloaded Homefront Inversion Kill Zone 1 (Remastered), 2, 3 Metro: Last Light Orange Box Collection (includes Half-Life 2 and Portal) Portal 2 (if you count it as FPS) Rage (sequel's coming for the PS4) Singularity Syndicate Wolfenstein (2009) Available on the PS4: Bedlam Bioshock 1, 2, Infinite (all Remastered) Borderlands 1, 2 (Remastered), Pre-Sequel, 3 later Bulletstorm (Remastered) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (Remastered) Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and probably more Dead Island and DI: Riptide (Remastered) Dishonored 1 and 2 Doom (and Eternal is coming) Duke Nukem 35th Anniversary Fallout 4 Far Cry 3 (Remastered), 4, 5, New Dawn Kill Zone: Shadows Fall Metro: Last Light (Redux), another one is on the way Shadow Warrior 1, 2 Wolfenstein: The New Order, New Colossus, and more is coming Pretty sure there's more I simply can't recall (such as Rainbow Six--the last one of those I played was in high school). I really don't know what titles other consoles would have that wouldn't also be available for the PS. |

Essentially you'll get the same thing…but it'll be a little different. I think its easier to play FPS games on PC because you have way better control. Using a mouse obviously gives you a better way to aim and shoot over a controller, but it's not like it's less fun on console.

I know this is a years old thread, but I really think that if FPS is your main genre, or more specifically multiplayer online FPS, then you really should be sticking to PC imo.
I think multiplayer FPS (Battlefield, COD, Apex whatever) is kind of terrible on console, even PS5. I think single player is fine (Doom Eternal in particular on PS5 is excellent). And of course your Far Cry’s for the single player etc. |

I will never understand how one FPS on a platform (Halo) suddenly earns that platform the reputation of being the "first person shooter console." This has got to be the most overblown, underinformed narrative in gaming. Literally every other mainstream FPS is available on PlayStation besides Halo. Plus it's pretty well documented now that Sony is partnering with other studios to create new FPS. They just haven't been revealed yet. Not to mention dormant IP's like Killzone and Resistance that could make a comeback.
As for the Dualsense not being good for FPS. It's all subjective. I actually don't have a preference regarding offset sticks vs parallel sticks. They both work fine and feel equally comfortable to me. If you don't like them there are plenty of 3rd party controllers for PS5 that are offered in the offset configuration. I was just chatting with a friend about how much the market has changed. I remember when it was so saturated with FPS and I really got burned out on them. But these days it feels like there are hardly any traditional FPS campaigns from AAA devs. Everything is either online or open world.
It's a shame since the FPS genre really lends itself to deliberate and engrossing level design. It's also a shame that nearly all Sony 1st party developers seem intent on making 3rd person action games, with little else seemingly on the horizon. I hope we see some more variety moving forward before Sony becomes another Ubisoft where everything seems based on the same template. We're definitely not there yet but with Sony's current leadership I could see it headed that way. What I wouldn't give for a new Resistance. |

+1. I much prefer 3rd, or even a hybrid, but it seems like Ghost Recon is the only the war-type game that gives 3rd any love.

That'd be nice, and it's a missed opportunity. Zipper has been defunct for a while, so Sony would have to tag a new studio to do it. I love to see Insomniac do it since they did an awesome job with Resistance, but apparently they're busy making more stupid Spiderman games.

![]() I would argue that the the previous DualShocks weren't that great for FPS games. At least if you are coming from an Xbox controller to a DS3 like I had back in the day when I played Killzone 2 after buying a PS3 and converting from the 360, it was awkward. With the DualSense being bigger and shaped closer to an Xbox controller, I can see it being better now. I've yet to play an FPS on the PS5 to give my actual opinion, but I wouldn't expect any issues. |
