Sony Teams With Taiwan To Nurture PS3 Game Industry

TAIPEI, Jun 30, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will cooperate with Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs to nurture and support a local industry of software developers for the Sony PlayStation 3 game console.

The agreement was announced at a joint press conference held by the ministry to outline its policy of support.

SCE will introduce PS3 game producers from Japan and the West to software developers in Taiwan, and will help these companies with technical guidance and the transfer of technologies from the Japanese and Western software developers.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs plans to subsidize 40 per cent of the cost of software development and technology licensing that the Taiwanese firms incur.

SCE will also help educate game developers by sponsoring lectures in cooperation with Tatung University.

Through this support, the Sony Corp. (TSE:6758) subsidiary aims to firmly establish a base for the PS3 game market in Taiwan and to develop games geared toward mainland China.

Sony to tap into Taiwan’s programming know-how

Sony Computer Entertainment Asia (SCEA) signed a memorandum of understanding with six local gaming developers yesterday to produce a wide array of digital content for its PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PlayStation Portable (PSP) products.

Under the agreement and through its Taiwanese subsidiary, the Japanese videogame powerhouse will for the first time open up its proprietary PlayStation platform to domestic digital content creators, including XPEC Entertainment Inc (樂陞科技), Intersev International Inc (昱泉國際), Yeck Entertainment Co (耶克娛樂) and SOGA Interactive Co (果子獸) as well as telephone operators Tatung InfoComm Co (大同電信) and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co (遠傳電信), SCEA president Tetsuhiko Yasuda told a press conference in Taipei yesterday.

More importantly, the collaboration with domestic software designers will allow Sony Computer Entertainment to broaden its vision beyond the manufacturing and distribution of hardware and software for its PlayStation products and to focus on creating wider networking plans by next spring, Yasuda said.

“A complete home entertainment vision will eventually allow all Sony products such as high- definition TVs, handsets, navigation systems and other devices to ‘talk’ to each other and deliver all forms of digital content,” Yasuda said.

This move and Sony’s grand vision of a PlayStation network had been expected, as the gaming entertainment giant suffered losses of nearly US$600 million last year, despite worldwide sales of 10 million PS3 systems.

This was largely the result of the PS3’s high retail price for hardware, which led consumers to switch to Nintendo Co’s Wii console in droves, with major game makers quickly following suit, reducing PS3’s gaming library titles, a recent NPD group research report showed.

PS3 was also affected by Apple Computer Inc’s popular iPhone and iPod Touch roll-outs, which immediately took up 10 percent of the global video gaming market share, as big-game developers like Sega Corp and Electronic Arts Inc jumped on the bandwagon to build popular casual games for the coveted devices.

Despite the raging gaming war amongst Microsoft Corp, Nintendo and SCEA, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Hwang Jung-chiou (黃重球) told yesterday’s signing ceremony that “the establishment of this cross-national research and development channel is the result of the ministry’s hard work to transform Taiwan into a world class digital content software provider country, not just a hardware manufacturing hub.”

Sony to work with local firms in game console development

Sony Computer Entertainment Taiwan announced June 29 it will set up a digital content research and development center in Taiwan, with the goal of collaborating with local firms in the development of 20 console games over the next three years.

According to the Institute for Information Technology, an organization jointly sponsored by the government and private enterprises, the potential profits from digital games are “astounding.” Including online, computer and console games, the digital content industry’s total revenue is expected to reach US$48.8 billion by 2011, of which 60 percent will come from console games such as PS3, PSP, XBOX and Wii.

Wu Ming-ji, director of the Department of Industrial Technology under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, said that Sony will set up a platform called the Digital Content Collaborative Research Center. Taiwanese companies will be able to develop new games directly on the new platform, which will be equipped with 90 PS3 game consoles.

Francis Yeah, director of the Industry Support Division at the III, pointed out that Taiwan is advanced in terms of online games software, but still lagging when it comes to the development of software for game consoles. Through this collaborative effort, Taiwan should be able to gain entry into the immensely popular game console market. The 20 new games to be developed over the next three years should help generate more than NT$1.8 billion (US$55 million) in revenue, he estimates.

Several local firms have expressed an interest in participating in the research, including XPEC Entertainment Inc., InterServ International Inc., Yeck Entertainment Corp. Ltd., Soga Interactive Co. Ltd., Tatung Infocomm Co. Ltd. and the Far Eastern Group.

Sony also plans to hold several classes in conjunction with Tatung University and I-Shou University. Instructors from Japan will be invited to teach at the two schools, in hopes of developing 200 gaming console software designers. Classes are scheduled to begin in September.

Sony Cat PS3 Party Game Being Localized (Toro to Morimori)

Did you notice a little game called Toro to Morimori on this week’s release list? It’s a party game starring Toro, the Sony cat, and his friends.

Japan gets the game on Thursday and an English version is scheduled to come out next month care of Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong. The international release will be known as Toro! Let’s Party! Kart racing and controller shaking mini-games don’t seem language intensive, but Toro! Let’s Party! has a text heavy story mode.

A cat filled mini-game collection may not be your cup of tea, but this release is notable for another reason. To date, Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong translated every quirky first party PS3 game that wasn’t immediately picked up by SCEA into English. Their track record includes Aquanaut’s Holiday, Afrika, Demon’s Souls, and now Toro! Let’s Party!
