Default Pearl (2022)

Quote:
Pearl is an upcoming American slasher film directed by Ti West, from a script he wrote, from an original story that he co-wrote with Mia Goth. It is intended to serve as a prequel to X, with Mia Goth reprising her role as Pearl.

Set during WWI in 1918 and explores the origins of Pearl, the villainous character from X. The events take place prior to the previous film, and explore how the cabin, where the "massacre of X" takes place, was once used as a boarding house during the war.

Today, Pearl has been given an R rating, for some strong violence, gore, strong sexual content and graphic nudity. Release date is unknown, but with the rating out, should be soon.

I'd be happy as a clam if this got as wide of a release as X did; It was a delight seeing that on a big screen.

Should get a wide release but no way it's as wide as X. Can't see them taking Pearl to over 3,000 theaters. 2,000 theaters would be impressive for this but even that might be a reach. If we can go by the teaser with X this won't even have half the appeal of that movie. But maybe it will look a little less niche with a full trailer.

Didn't X nearly hit 3000? I think it had A24's widest release to date, unless if EEAAO has that mantle.

Oh yeah you're right. I thought it was 3,000 but it was 2,920. Which is honestly still insane for that movie. Can't believe Everything Everywhere was only 2,220.

They need to wide release this in theatres in September since that month is dead.

I did but using the tags on my phone isn't the most optimal thing in the world tbh.

^ October seems liter on horror than September, but I'd imagine they're all trying to avoid getting buried by Halloween Ends at the box office.

Of the A24 movies that have played in my area, Men is the only one that didn't have a decent sized audience. While 3K theaters may be a stretch, this is technically part of a now existing franchise so a wide release is possible.

I'm not sure if it'll be out this year though. A24 does have other movies coming out over the next few months and I'm sure they want to promote and market those. I think Q1 2023 is more likely. I do want to say I am ready to watch this should it come out this year though

Hopefully we'll find out a release date and strategy tomorrow with the trailer.

I think X did less than $12 million domestic total, and this being viewed as a sequel / prequel means it will probably only get a fraction of that (the percentage of that $12 million who liked X and come back for more). I don't know what type of box office figures A24 considers a hit, but that's something to take into account.

This is getting me thinking: How does a wide release for this sound during a dump month like January or Feb? It's not like A24 hasn't done this before (The Witch).

I seem to recall reading the budget was 10 million for both films combined (shot at the same location, same crew etc..)

It made over 14 million WW so if Pearl can reach double figures, it should be enough to ensure the sequel gets made.

I don't see any way Pearl reaches double digits. X barely did. This one doesn't even have the recognizable cast that X did.
