How much "original" is left in 2022 when there's been a century of movies made at this point? All movies and stories in general are going to have similar themes and elements from other stories. It's how they're told that matters. I don't need original. I just want good storytelling. And I trust Ti West after seeing a number of his films, each one improving on the previous. "X" was outstanding. |

This was one of my favorite movie posters from this year, so I decided to seek out an original one sheet. Now to get it framed.

I enjoyed Pearl although I found it very slow in the beginning (like Pearl's life?) and almost gave up, but wow, did it deliver later on. Having said that, now I know the backstory to her, I don't know how many times I would go back and watch it. For me, X was worth the purchase (seen it twice now), but I don't know about Pearl.

After being so severely disappointed by HALLOWEEN ENDS as a sequel to a narrative I was enjoying, I went into PEARL preparing myself for the possibility that a movie could be so bad as to damage my esteem for it's precursor.
After watching PEARL twice now (back to back), I am pleasantly surprised that I actually liked it marginally more than X, which I loved! I am completely confused by the number of posts, both negative and positive, describing PEARL as just more of the same that X had on offer. IMHO, these 2 films are as different as TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE WIZZARD OF OZ in style and tone. Even as I enjoyed Mia Goth in X, I felt that the effusive praise for her performance was just a little bit attributable to the "gimmick" of dual roles and latex. In PEARL, she has me 100% SOLD! Even more amazing for the fact that she plays against another drop mic performance against the actor playing her mother. It is a travesty that, while this is sure to get her more work, it will not get her a sniff from the academy. Count me as one that doesn't believe for a second that this was made for a million bucks. Can someone explain to a hollywood outsider what incentive there is to perpetuate this lie? |

I just watched X but I saw Pearl first and it was really fun already knowing Pearl's backstory while watching X for the first time.
I definitely want to see Maxxxine What a BUMMER that the Pearl trailer [?] special feature [?] that was tacked onto the end of X after the credits in the theaters is not on the bluray. I really liked the Maxxxine trailer at the end of Pearl. |

Prequels are usually the last desperate cash grab from studios who suspect the audience has finally spotted all their sequels just recycle the same material. It was a very pleasant surprise to see how good this was, interesting plot and visually inventive but it's Mia Goth's film, she's mesmerising even in long stretches of dialogue. That smile is one of the most unnerving things I've seen in ages.

I think I enjoyed X more. This was still a good film though. As many have said, it is astonishing it was filmed on such a low budget - even if they re-used sets/actors/crew/etc. I did love the film style and Miss Goth of course.

I thought X was just okay. I like the premise and it was pretty entertaining, but nothing special. I think if it had a better ending, I would have like it more.
But Pearl, on the other hand, I thought was great. The story again was nothing special, but for some reason I like movies about people descending into madness, and this film was a really well executed example of that. Between the period it's set in, the cinematography, and the music, this movie elevates the simple plot. And of course the crown jewel of the film is Mia Goth. Wow, what a performance! She was really great in this. Now I'm a lot more interested in seeing how this trilogy ends with MaXXXine. |
