Default Which would you buy?

A new pair of Def Tech STS for $1350 each or a demo pair of Def Tech ST for $1200 each that have been on display for 9 months? The STs have a few minor surface blemishes and sound good now and will have the full warranty. My concern is that the STs have probably been through some pretty rough demo use in 9 months and how well they will hold up for future use. Kind of like buying a HDTV that has been on display in the torch mode for 9 months.

These speakers will be used with a Def Tech Mythos 9 center speaker and two Def Tech Gem XLs.

Can you use the blemishes on the display STs to your advantage to negotiate a little bit better price?

I might be able to get them to come down some more as they were very flexible. Do you think the STs being demo'ed for 9 months in a busy showroom room should be a concern?

That's kind of a tough question to answer. I would be curious how often (if ever) they've been driven to severe distortion or clipping because these are the things that damage speakers. Unfortunately there's no way to ever know the answer to that question. Simply playing loud, on the other hand, isn't anything to be concerned about. Ods are that if they sound good now and are functioning properly they are undamaged. Overall I suspect you would be safe buying them, especially since you're still getting the full factory warranty. To just compare the model specs, it's the nicer speaker, and even if something does happen to one (or both) of them the warranty would take care of it.

Also just for the sake of discussion, my surrounds were display models and I've never had an issue with them.

I have bought some display items also from Circuit City and they still work fine. You're probably right - it will be a safe buy.

I really don't believe you'll have any issues. If you get them I hope you'll post some pictures of your setup.

Thanks. I have the Pioneer 25 like you and use them with Mirage OS3 set-up at home.

Both the Def Tech and Mirage sound great with the Pioneer receiver.

I just called the BB Magnolia 50 miles away and had them hold the STs for me. I haven't been able to audition the STS in my home as one of the towers had the incorrect bore for the screws that attach the stand. I had to repack both speakers which is really a hassle so I told BB that I would return them and take the ST in the store that is already set up.

Thought there would be issues with the demo but the new in the box had the issue.

If it gets too lonely, send them to me. I promise I will build you a couple of DIY speakers.

Thanks. As I suspected.

Oh well, at least I don't need a separate thread to talk about Sonus Fabers with myself

i'm using sonus faber too!! i quit the whole home theatre thing and went back to my love for music so i rock a 2.1 setup which i also use when watching the occasional blu ray. i got the toy bookshelfs on stands paired with a cambridge audio 840a integrated and a dac magic with my logitech touch for music. rel t2 sub also. i actually prefer the 2.1 compared to my old 5.1 setup for movies, no need for a center channel with the sonus faber.

Another Sonus Faber owner! I wouldn't have believed it! Fantastic!

I bought my GPH's for music first and foremost, then added the center and surrounds when I got into HT. But it's always the music first; once you get that right the HT falls neatly into place.

It's nice to find another brother-in-arms

Since there is no official thread for HSU speakers, I'm wondering if anyone here owns their HB-1s?

Please check out the October 2010 issue - page 72 - for a tremendous review on the Phase Tech PC 1.5's and new wireless sub. They received a "Top Pick" award and 5 star ratings for Performance, Value, and Build Quality.

Besides sounding great for Music and Movies, they are built in the USA.

If you need any more details, please send me a message. Thanks,

Jack
