Hi,
I recently was given a Mac mini and had a great time over at the computer audiophile website learning how to set it up as a music server. It was fantastic but soon the kids claimed we didn't have enough computers for homework (and plants vs zombies.) So the mini went to them and I started using my iPod Classic for everything. I had a appletv first gen that I got at garage sale for $5 sitting around so I set that up with crystalbuntu and xbmc and filled a usb HD with apple lossless files. It's working great! Kind of even as good as the Mac mini was before. Point being it could be the cheapest way to pick up a music server however atv gen 1 sometimes go for too much on eBay because you can do lots of other things with them too. (They are super for pirating, which I don't care for.) I use the server headless (no display) and control it with roomie remote via ip like everything in my system.
