USA Blu-ray That don't have the Special Features we need?

When I buy a movie or a show. I expect it to have the same amount as features as the SD does, unless it is a HD Feature only on blu-ray but from a lot of the movies I have been buying here are three examples:

Independence Day - The movie is great. It looks great on blu-ray but all I get are trailers? Come on! I remember the special edition that got out of print but it had behind the scenes, also the theatrical and special edition versions of the movie

Stir of Echoes - I remember the DVD had a music video and some other stuff. I think cast bio. Why isn't it on the Blu-Ray?

Cast Away - I remember the DVD having a making of feature and other stuff. Why do all i get is trailers??

Why can't studios release the blu-rays with all the special features. They can fit room on them with 50GB extra space?

Makes me wonder if I should double dip just to get the features.

Paul

most of the early Lionsgate titles are void of any extras(Crash,T2,The Punisher)Plus a few of the early Sony ones too( A Knight's Tale,Fifth Element). Same goes for some early Fox titles(Transporter 1 and 2,Commando,Predator,Rocky,Robocop,Usual Suspects,Night At The Museum,Hoosiers)!

Silent Hill. And it came out at the same time the DVD did, I think.

And it's also a reason I don't double dip on some of my favorite movies. I'd love to get Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven in HD, but the 3-disc and 4-disc DVD sets, respectively, contain a bunch of awesome stuff, almost none of which are on the Blu's.

I guess mine would be The Fifth Element, Independence Day, Kingdom of Heaven, and The Departed. The DVD version has both extended and theatrical cuts plus tons of extras, while the Blu-ray only has the theatrical version. The Departed DVD Steelbook has a documentary on Scorsese that the Blu-ray doesn't have. The Fifth Element also has lots of extras on a second disk not on the blu-ray. Finally, the Kingdom of Heaven... I have two DVD sets of the theatrical and director's cuts, each with their own set of special features. The director's cut has two disks that cover a pretty extensive making of documentary plus the DVD has the movie in a roadshow presentation with intro, intermission, and ending. These are not on the Blu-ray.

For these four Blu-rays, I have kept the DVDs for the special features they have. Most other DVDs I've upgraded I've either given to friends or traded them into to a local second-hand shop.

Same here. Blu-ray is advertised as the ultimate movie experience but we find ourselves with many missing features. I think it is partially that studios don't care and partially that they plan on releasing more editions for us to buy; if they come out with the ultimate edition now, there'll be no reason to buy a new one.

That's why I like the Close Encounter of the Third Kind, it is the Ultimate Edition so I won't have to buy a new one.

Blu ray is the ultimate movie experience. We get the movie looking and sounding better then we did on DVD. As for special features, it could be a cost thing. It would take more time and effort, which means more $$$$, to add special features. I will rarely, if ever, watch any special features. Out of my 111 movies, I have only seen special features on maybe two Discs. Some people love them, but i think more people could careless about the additional features and buy the movie for the movie itself.

Yes, Blu-ray is the ultimate PQ/AQ no doubt. If you want to define the movie as the main feature than okay, Blu-ray is the ultimate movie experience. I don't think that the film qualifies as the whole movie; my definition includes all that is in the case (such as booklets even and pictures or posters). So to me, a DVD with tons of extra features and commentaries is superior to a Blu-ray with no special features (or severely lacking in comparison).

I'll call it the ultimate version when it has everything to offer but that is me.

Pretty much every BD released in 2006 and several realeased in early 2007 are practically barebones (with some remarkable exceptions).

Some notorious examples:

Rocky
Crash
Robocop
Predator
Babel
The Fifth Element
House of Flying Daggers
King Kong (released in 2009!)
Kingdom of Heaven
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Reservoir Dogs
Terminator
The Usual Suspects

Your opinion is fine for you.

But for many people the quality of the movie is why they buy a blu-ray.

Extras are just a bonus and not the prime motivator.

Master and Commander - kept the collector's DVD bonus disc

Kingdom of Heaven - still holding on to the hope that they'll re-issue this one with bonus features. Only reason I don't own it yet.

There are others I'm sure, these just came to mind. I'd say Quantum of Solace but I know there'll be a new set out by next year at this time.

It is nice and sweet to have extra features with the main feature. However, I am strongly against if studios compresses the main feature and reduce quality just to make room for special features. The main feature is the key and that is the reason for the purchase. Hence, the main feature has to be transferred and encoded while preserving highest possible HD quality to take advantage of current displays and future much larger displays.

If there is no room on the BD, they may include an extra DVD for SD special features without compromising the quality of the main feature.

Big Fish

The DVD had tons of bonus features while the Blu-ray only had a Tim Burton commentary. I'm still holding out until Sony releases a new special edition Blu-ray of the movie.

Default Special Features

A special feature that I like to see included with a movie (be it DVD or Blu-Ray) is the original trailers for the movie.
For some reason I enjoy seeing the trailers since they are the reasons why I wanted to see the movie in the first place. I guess it's a nostalgia thing for me...

All this discussion and all these examples and no one has mentioned Carrie yet?

The Blu is bare-bones, even though the special edition DVD had several featurettes that were interesting. At the very least, would it have killed MGM to include a copy of the DVD version of the film with those bonuses on it?

Full Metal Panic: TSR looks like it won't have all of the dvd extras and neither will Burst Angel.

Fan Boys, the DVD had extras but the Blu didn't, and then of all things it didn't even come out in the US.

It's just because they will release another version later. Most BDs aren't completely filled, and SD extras don't really take up a whole amount of space so it could be done easily but some companies would rather release two separate versions of the same movie than just one (makes sense from a business standpoint).

I do watch the special features on a BD as well as the movie itself. I find them interesting. With the price of BDs, I see it more of a value than the digital copy or DVD copy. Neither of which is useful to me other than as a paper weight. I do know that some people do use these.

I think that BDs should have the same if not more special features than the DVD equivalents. I would also like to see the special features be in HD unless the source material for the feature was so bad they couldn't fix it.

The special features give me an appreciation for the effort that goes into the creation of movie that I'm watching. And it goes to show that it takes more to creativity, ingenuity, and craftsmanship to put together effects-laden movies than typical dramas and comedies. There isn't enough appreciation of these types of film. It is much harder to bring to life an imaginary world that is based on existing source material (comics, graphic novels, novels) than simply filming a fiction that is based in current times.

Paramount and Disney have done a great job at providing HD quality features in addition to the movie itself. I don't see why other studios couldn't.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Where is/are the commentary track(s)? All of Kevin Smith's movies get even better when listening to the commentary. This is his first film that does not have one.
