There's an odd bit in the novel of From Russia With Love when Bond is repulsed at Kerim Bay shooting a man in cold blood...something the book claims Bond has never done!

I haven't seen Dr. No since I was a kid and already a 007 fan, watching it a first time on Saturday afternoon TV in the 80s, and wondering when some action would kick in to see 007 in a cool car chase or shoot out with the bad guys. I kept waiting, and finally lost interest after so much dialog on the island scene without action to break it up.

It's good to see there is some action in the film. I should give it another watch all these many years later if I get a chance.

The first 4 Bond films are not too action/stunt-focused relatively speaking. They are more about style (Bond's lifestyle elements for e.g.), exciting characters, intrigue, memorable dialogues (Bond, James Bond; 1M$ Mr. Bond; I expect you to die, Mr. Bond; and so on), and plots based on Fleming's books.

Once these things achieved perfection, the focus shifted to having better action sequences and stunts (TSWLM).

Good points regarding the books and character focus more than the action early on in the series, thanks.

Don't know if some have known about this already but Dr. No is having a one-day only screening in theaters in the US. August 21. Fathom Events is behind this so the quality may not look good for some theaters (Just hoping there's no framing or sound issues like their Carpenter's The Thing screenings).

While it'd be nice to see it in a theater, I'm sure it will be with the crappy re-mixed audio that's on the blu-ray. Plus it's likely to be a stream not a DCP, so at that point I'll just watch it at home.

I hope we get to see all the James Bond movies in 4K some day..

There's 4k web-dl's of all the Bonds, but they're not much of an improvement over the blu-rays.

As a collector of physical media, that not something for me. And it sounds like there has not been done much work in that release.
The 60th anniversary would be a nice occasion to put some work in a good 4K UHD Blu-Ray release of the older James Bond movies, starting with Dr. No of course.

I mean even if they did two a month for a year as a 4k release then you would have the whole series in a year and people wouldn't have to splash out on one massive set at once.

But aren't sets always cheaper than buying individually?

The Dr. No 60th Anniversary screening by Fathom Events includes the "Being James Bond" retrospective. Does anybody know if this contains any spoilers for any of the other James Bond movies? The only Daniel Craig Bond film I've seen so far is No Time To Die.

Of course it does; it's a retrospective. A retrospective that assumes you've seen all of Craig's other Bond movies.

Saw Dr. No 60th Anniversary on Sunday with my brother. Good film! I'm ashamed to say that this was my first time seeing it. The picture and sound was excellent! At the end it said it was scanned in 4K. We didn't stay for the Daniel Craig retrospective.

On October 25, 1961,Fleming wrote to his confidant Blanche Blackwell, "The man they have chosen for James Bond Sean Connery, is a real charmer, a good actor with the right looks and physique". Fleming returned to the set often, taken by Ursula Andress and including her character as a cameo in the book On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Fleming also discussed with Sean the details of his character and how he should approach the role over many beers.

I will be watching this tonight.

More than any other Bond, perhaps any other movie, my love and appreciation for this particular flick grows with each and every viewing.
