Default The World Is Not Enough (1999)

The World is Not Enough is a different type of Bond film, especially from Brosnan's era, as it has an element of suspense and a woman as the key antagonist.

Pros include the excellent pre-title sequence, background score, and locations around the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. M also gets to be in the field (so it is not just in Skyfall). There are interesting characters like Elektra King, Valentin Zukovsky, and the Cigar Girl. In this film, Brosnan performs at its best.

Cons include its ordinary action sequences including the ski chase and the finale in the submarine. However, some are like thrown-in or add-on elements to not distract from the main story for e.g. the film could have ended at the Maiden Tower in Istanbul rather than in the submarine. Many don't like Dr. Christmas Jones, but I have no major issues with her.

In my last viewing of Bond films (Link), I rated it 8/10. Which is the same as Goldeneye (8) and Tomorrow Never Dies (7.5, rounded off to 8) - all 3 films are pretty close to each other as each film has its fair share of pros and cons.

How do you rate this film? Is this Brosnan's best Bond film?

I like this film a lot. Brosnan is probably at his toughest here. I have fond memories of seeing TWINE for the first time. It's definitely one of my favorites.

This was my first Bond movie in theaters and only one of three films I've seen with my dad who's not really a movie guy. I really like The World Is Not Enough. Pretty underrated in my opinion. Some great looking women for the 11 year old me as well. Underrated title song by Garbage as well. Cool music video!

Must've watched the VHS it a half a dozen times and it opened with this tribute to Desmond Llewellyn. It's probably on the DVD/Blu-ray now too.

I thought it was half a good film. The first half, if it continued at that momentum, could have equalled GoldenEye in my opinion. But as soon Denise Richards showed up the film just fell apart for me. I liked Pierce, Sophie Marceau was very good and Bond's 'I never miss' was probably one of my favourite Bond lines. But I struggle to decide whether Denise Richards or Tanya Roberts from A View to a Kill deserve the title of 'Worst Bond girl'. Probably Denise Richards because at least Tanya Roberts didn't try to play a scientist

I love the theme song and don't remember anything else about the movie

wait, I remember a stupid newspaper spoiled that Sophie Marceau played the villain before I watched the movie, that's insane, there's only a few lines about the movie so I thought it would be plot synopsis, then I realized it's the freaking plot twist

This was actually the first Bond film I've ever watched and I saw it in the theater with a friend of mine so this film has a special place in my heart. It's not my favorite Bond by any means but I still really enjoy it.

This thread made me rewatch it … A brilliant story relative to non-Fleming Bond films … Sophie Marceau in the 2nd half of the film is fun to watch! Denise Richards is the bomb!

My favorite Brosnan Bond. The opening is one of my favorites! Marceau was fantastic!

As for Richards, she's perfectly fine in the film. It's a Bond film. Nuclear technicians are allowed to be beautiful. Calm down.

Great theme song and my favorite band. They will be performing the song at The Sound of 007 concert in October.

I thought it was shit back in 1999 and while I've softened a bit on it over the years, it's still my least favourite Brosnan outing

That's right, I'll watch DAD over it anytime.

Come at me, bro.

Beautiful yes, but they’re not usually thicker than a Boxing Day turd.

Steven Spielberg had nothing to do with this movie or any other Bond movie. If he did, he wouldn’t have chosen Denise Richards for this and he wouldn’t choose her for anything else he does, either.

Heather Locklear, Ava Sambora and now Richie Sambora would beg to differ.

Try telling that last part to Heather Locklear, Ava Sambora and now Richie Sambora.

While I find the film itself hit and miss, Brosnan's delivery of "She's waiting for you..." to Carlyle at the end - and his little reaction shot - always held a certain potency to me unseen in the other Brosnan finales.

Also, what's the deal with the opening sequence - it feels like two opening sequences tacked together? I never looked into it (at least, I don't believe I ever did) so I'm not sure if there's some story there, but ever since I was a kid I always felt like something was off there in regards to the momentum.
