850B from 2014 and 900C from 2015 are the other models. But the 900A was the only Sony 4K flagship to offer passive.

Hi Bruce,

My 800B from 2014 is active. Did Sony make both formats at the time? I didn't investigate further at the time.

Joe, I believe all of them were active except those I mentioned. I never understood why they choose active on most and passive on a few others. Maybe it was the panel maker's decision and Sony didn't really care one way or the other. After all, you don't even see 3D listed as a feature in the specs on lot of places, much less if it is active or passive. Even some of the reviews never mentioned it.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for getting back to me. Maybe Sony simply offered both to gain sales. But not to promote 3D as a feature? Did they believe 3D would actually be a turn off?

Most all the 4K TVs around that time had 3D, but the selling point was of course 4K resolution. Vizio I believe was the first to discontinue 3D models in 2014, so 3D as a selling feature was already minuscule (generally speaking) if a major manufacturer was dropping support. And so a general indifference to 3D by the other manufacturers was probably already in place by then as well.

Hi Bruce,

Most of us agree the industry could have just kept it as a feature.

Now this is my opinion, not as an educated CEO but on my gut instinct as a consumer. If one is interested in a certain set, I do not believe the inclusion of 3D as an added feature would not sway them otherwise. The important thing would be it's including simulation. The reason I say that is if its their first experience with home 3D, though the manufacturer should not over hype it and compare this to real 3D, it should be enough to wet the whistle for most. Know that did for me. Also, there can be an app with demo 3D for them to experience a true 3D affect (some do contain 3D but has to be searched for). Also, they won't be exposed to the hype of an avalanche of future 3D material which was what was originally spun and never really materialized, making it appear 3D was dead instead of a specialized form of entertainment.

Again, am no business person but do feel confident saying I have an instinct for the average consumer. Many will ignore the 3D feature if they are just TV watchers. But for those who just go so far to collect DVDs, I think they could have an interest in going onto an inexpensive Blu-ray 3D player and brgin collecting discs.

Aren't disc sales the area where money continues to be spent, just like with streaming? A TV is a one time sale, not a commodity for upgrading, so the inclusion of the feature is only the doorway to 3D entertainment, not the engine making it profitable.

Do I sound like I'm in over my head or onto something? . And this is not meant to be a guarantee written in stone. Just a look into a possible way for the industry to make more profit with 3D, which of course is their only concern.

Yes I have, so I can maintain the overall smug righteous attitude of knowing more than you.

Sony’s massive new MicroLED display stands 17 feet tall and packs 16K resolution

???

Yes you have what?

The 16K thing (meaning as a home format not on a giant screen) was a joke. 8K is overkill for the home market, but that won't stop them from marketing it as the next big thing. Hell, they had to add HDR to 4K so people would notice a difference in a 55" set from more than 2 feet away....

If I've got a 300" screen and sit 12 feet from it at home, yeah 8K might be nice. I'd need that 17 foot screen to see 16K.

My comment previously did come across as a tad odious & wasn't meant to be so harsh. Glad you maintained composure VonMagum, I won't be adding anymore info to this thread. Time to move onto messing about with my new (2018 model) Leica X-U waterproof camera!!

Check back in anytime you would like. We'll still be here, loving 3D.

Now going on seven years after you first wrote your derogatory remarks about 3D, and many 3D Star Wars features later.

Is it true that Samsung announced to discontinue production of BD players in general?

Unfortunately it is: https://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-to...s-report-says/

I've been a long time supporter of Samsung. All of my tv's, cell phones, 3d blu-ray player, and other items are Samsung. It's the main brand I buy.

This is scary because if LG and Sony follows Samsung's move, real soon we will lose not just 3D but BD players altogether

I'm sure Sony will stick it out until Blu-ray is completely dead.

There needs to be a new electronics company that's in it for the love of it, not just for the money. Pioneer has sort of been in the past, but I haven't been too impressed with their current offerings- they haven't even made any sort of display in a while.
