Probably not Warner policy to license masters from other sources, and I believe they were responsible for destroying every known copy of the British film in the US prior to their release of the 1944 feature.

...Why'd they do that?

To take it out of circulation so it wouldn’t complete with their adaptation. This is back when film prints kept making rounds to different cinemas long after their initial release. They did the same with Paramount’s Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde with Fredric March when they released their (kinda terrible) version with Spencer Tracy and Lana Turner. Fox also likely did it with Love Affair with Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer when they produced the remake (An Affair to Remember) with Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant.

That would’ve been MGM, who actually made this movie. Warner didn’t inherit the rights to the pre-1984 MGM catalog until the 90s (through their purchase of Turner).

Finally! I'm so tired of trying to explain to people what "gaslighting" is. Now I can throw in the Blu-ray and take the afternoon off. Maybe get some therapy.

Being relatively new to this hobby there are very few films on my list of "not on Blu-ray but should be", and this is one of them. Excellent news!

Will definitely be picking this one up. Been wanting to pick up WA's release for On Dangerous Ground as well so will probably pick both of those up at the same time for a nice classic double feature! I'm admittedly thrown by the choice to put the British version in SD though.

I just bought the original from BFI for 9.99 pounds on Zoom. I have never watched the original nor the remake.
