Yeah the quality of those 5Mbps 1080p iTunes HD movies sure is great. I love watching movies full of compression artifacts and most times only with 160kbps AAC 2.0 audio. Srs, you can make a better quality encode using a Blu-ray source for free.

Come on guys, when we talk about outstanding Digital HD we're talking Vudu HDX at 25+Mbps. iTunes doesn't even come close to that, no wonder you guys hate Streaming. So get some good equipment, and access a decent Provider then you can comment on Digital HD.

Ripping from a Blu-ray is illegal in the US. Even if it were not illegal in the US, the shelf space issues would still be a problem for many Blu-ray collectors once they reach a few hundred blu-rays (if you keep the cases which most blu-ray collectors I assume do) in their collection. Even if it were not illegal to rip a Blu-ray in the US, you would still keep the Blu-ray as a backup of your rip just in case of hard drive failure.

Hmm I'll have to try it as I have not yet used my code from my Deadpool Blu-ray.

I'm not sure where I advocated anything illegal.

But in case anyone hasn't read these - http://www.avsforum.com/forum/39-net...vs-amazon.html

There are more comparisons and in every one, Blu-ray is the pretty obvious winner. It actually makes a good case for iTunes 720p many times if you must buy a download.

I won't deny the convenience of streaming. But check out some of those comparisons. They make a pretty good case in favor of iTunes 720P most times. But I don't really understand why one would pay $20-25 for a download and get short-changed on the quality compared to Blu-ray. Most Blu-ray discs come with a digital download code too.

There is NO video app on Apple Watch.

And I think most people watching iTunes movies are watching them on an Apple TV or an iPad.

I would never blame digital for a title not being on Blu-ray. But I will blame digital for titles not being on physical media at all. Before digital became popular way more TV shows and indie titles were released on DVD than they are now. Since the studios prefer the lower costs and higher control they have with digital with any titles that aren't popular enough that is the only way they get released.

They probably use the digital format release's as way of gauging the interest levels in any given catalog title. If they sell better on digital than they had initially predicted, they may be influenced to release that on Blu-ray.

It's a matter of time. I can hear them Now!

"This is like so cool! So I can watch Star Wars on my wrist anywhere, anytime!
"You can? That's incredible!
"I know, right? (Or some other manufactured 'cool phrase of the year' )

Mark my words, the back of my blurays will have Ultravile Digital HD with a graphic of a tv, tablet, smartphone AND a Smartwatch by 2018.

Apple Watch 2 is strongly rumoured to have video playback. It's only a matter of time. If sheep are told it's cool, it will be cool trust me.

The post apocalyptic future of postage stamp films is nearly upon us. And you guys are the enablers IMO. Congrats!

I don't think so, it's a catch-22. If a digital-only release sells poorly than the studios don't think a disc release would fair much better. If they sell great on digital than the studios don't deem a physical release to be necessary.

But I'm much more concerned about new releases not getting any physical release than catalog titles (which already have DVD releases) not getting Blu-ray releases.

If vudu could work outside of US, I will try it out, maybe VPN could help, will see. If the Digital download or Streaming matches the quality of Blu-ray, it will be a better comparison. I had two blu-rays scratched beyond watchable, and at least in this aspect the Digital has an advantage here.

Vudu looks promising. I like that I can convert my own Blu-ray discs to digital for $2.00. I guess the question is why I have to pay $2.00 for a lower quality version.

It is a different format. DVD is a lower quality and you still have to pay for it if you have a Blu-ray. If you're concerned with the quality pay nothing to VUDU and continue on with discs.
