Strangely enough, the difference is smaller than 10%, at least on the ones I was testing.

Royal Space Force 4K, for example, price difference is only like 250 yen at checkout. 10% would be 1000 yen or so.

If I buy from Amazon.co.jp, I don't have to worry that I will have to pay taxes / duty on delivery. With cdjapan it is certain that I will pay something, so I end up paying a lot more. For me, the choice is obvious. Additionally, I have already bought from Amazon many times and have never had a problem with packages.

I'm getting the same thing when I compare costs to a JP address to costs to a US address. Maybe the IRS is forcing Amazon JP to collect sales tax or something. Or they're not taking off the full 10% and pocketing the difference. Pretty slimy either way, considering they aren't showing any added/subtracted amounts during checkout.

Amazon Japan now charges sales tax for shipments to the US. The sales tax is for your area, so they charge me the Minnesota sales tax rate for example. You will only see the rate charged if you look at "Tax Invoice" in your order history. I've been charged 7.375% tax since sometime in 2020.

I did not know that. They've been charging me since my December 2019 order. The April 2019 order did not have sales tax.

To the price shown on the Amazon.jp page you have to take off the Japan 10% tax, and then add your state tax, and that's the price that should appear on your invoice.

Example from the Thor3D thread where someone ordered from the UK.

I'm going to assume that it is tax bing added on.
Price shown on Amazon.jp: 6783¥
minus 10% Japan tax: 6783¥ x 0.90 = 6166¥
plus 20% UK tax: 6783¥ x 1.20 = 7399¥

And now Hobby Search is going to charge sales tax. I just got this email. Won't be surprised at this point if more Japanese stores charge US state sales tax.

Dear Scott

This mail is sent to all customers registered in states we are
to start Sales Tax collection for.

Nowadays, most states in the US require remote sellers to collect
sales tax on their behalf, although conditions differ for each state.
As the state registered on your account also requires us to collect
the sales tax for them, we will begin doing so as of November 1st, 2022.

We understand this will affect you greatly, so we are offering
a special 20% off shipping discount to support you with your orders
(with exception of orders using DHL shipping).

If you need to change shipping method for your orders,
please do so from your account page.

[Hobby Search account page]

Please be noted that this offer is valid only on orders addressed to
states we are collecting sales/use tax for.

For more detail, please see below.

It's pretty ridiculous, isn't it? Collecting domestic sales tax when the sale happens in another country.

I don't object to paying a sales tax, but I do object to paying a tax to the state I live in, instead of the state/country I'm buying from. If I go to Iowa and buy something, I'd pay their tax rate, not mine, and it would rightfully go to their state, to maintain the infrastructure and services available to that business. The fact that the transaction is being done remotely shouldn't change anything. Why should a polity with no stake or connection to a business benefit from the tax revenues from that sale?

It's so peculiar cus you can order the Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen Steelbook but you can not the regular edition even tho they have the same release date.

The difference? Regular's pre-order listing came out a long time ago I think when they still had the shipping "clamp", before they reinstated the availability of ordering pre-orders, while the Steelbook pre-order listing came out after they did the partial lifting of the "clamp" and you could order stuff like pre-orders again.

Before "Snap" and after "Snap".

Is a mystery
I have noticed quite a lot of the items like the std Doctor WHo/Snowman item are often available on AmazonUS via the Amazon UK Global Store -- sometimes a lower price once VAT is gone and shipping added (at least individual items). If you're making a larger order, then sometimes the price advantage shifts to the UK. Preorders rarely are on AmazonUS, but the current release items frequently are.

I usually just search with the ASIN which should be the same across different Amazon portals.

I don't know exactly why Amazon does this since items from teh Global Store appear to be shipped identically from teh UK just like direct orders.

Yeah, I play the ASIN game with UK releases but with Japan items I guess I'll have to play the YesasiaCDJapanPlayasia game too. Just got my 1rst order from CDJ for the amz.jp unavailable items that were to be in my order when I found out I couldn't order as I've always done. How this is a economies decision for amz.jp, I don't know

Ok I've added all volumes to the database. Too bad about Vol.1 which became unavailable 2 seconds after the 27th's midnight.

Would somebody care to check the specs on them, specially Vol.1 as amazon.jp for example says 1 discs in some and others 3 and says Vol. 1 is 72m and the cover/images are exactly the same:

(click on the at top right to discard other countries on the list)

Also Honneamise, is this one: Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise 4K Blu-ray ?, or is that ^^ another edition?

There are two versions of the 4K JP release: one with the storyboard collection that is scheduled to be released on November 4th, and one without on November 25.

To me storyboards are just a waste of space, I have no interest in them. If I grab this it will just be the general release, for sure.

Each volume has 3 discs, a main feature disc with some bonus features on it, a bonus disc that has the various cast specials like weekly "watch along" episodes where cast members would watch the episode and talk along side it, and a special CD with drama parts and so forth.

Each volume's length is indeed 72 minutes for the main feature, so that'll be consistent each time for 3 episodes.
