The importance of extras goes beyond just one's personal preference. It's important to include as much as we possibly can from an archival point of view, also, and we take that philosophy with every disc we make. If there are extras, we will include them if possible.

As for the concerns about video bitrate regarding the main feature, the amount we are currently giving it is still in the ballpark of what we would normally give, so there's no need to worry about possibly compromising video quality. Again, the numbers only mean so much at the end of the day anyways.

I watch all extras on the first spin, and revisit ones I enjoyed. Why not have the most you can get out of a release, as long as nothing important is sacrificed. I love buying something knowing that I will never need to buy a better version (until someone comes up with a better version).

I can understand complaining when something is missing but I don't get complaining over more being included. Just because you don't need extras, dubs, a slipcover, or little postcards doesn't mean others don't want them.
Though I can understand complaining when you're forced to buy the edition with a artbook, figures, stuff that actually drives up the price, just to get all of the disc content. At least a fully packed disc takes up the same amount of space as a barebones disc.

I love special features...too bad many movies and shows I would love to see such things only get bare bone releases....if they get released at all.

I think the spirit of my original question has gone off on a different path than intended.

I'm just wondering if there's anything holding Disco back from spreading this, or any release, across two discs when they've been aiming for one disc this whole time? I get that the logistics of a price increase for the consumer and the extra investment of time/money into changing everything from the producers standpoint would have to be made (finding/ordering more physical discs to print the data on, re-designing the intended single-disc packaging to two, etc). But is re-encoding for smaller file sizes that much easier/not as important as just using more discs? Or is there maybe something else not mentioned that would prevent them from changing the release structure of one disc into two (licensing agreements, or some else professional not known to the common collector)?

2 discs = higher production costs = higher price = less sales

1 disc = we suffer more = more people see/buy Gunbuster

No brainer

It would go against the decision to abandon DVD but couldn't some of the extras be moved to a DVD. Unless all the extras are in HD and have lossless audio wouldn't DVD get the job done? Plus the cost to make a DVD being less expensive.

1 BD-50 for main content & essential extras that would benefit most from Blu-ray presentation

1 DVD-9 for standard definition extras

A good number of releases have extras that benefit from better encoding that wouldn't be possible on a DVD (especially ones that have more colors where MPEG2 can sort of glitch out.) To say nothing of the significantly higher resolution subtitles that SD on Blu-ray can have.

Not to mention that actually would complicate things, as the way to build the discs, check the discs, etc. are entirely different.

But why? You can put SD extras on a (non UHD) BD. I don’t know the specifics, but I can’t imagine (in a hypothetical world where 2 discs are needed), a BD50 and a BD25 would be more than a few cents more expensive than a BD50 and a DVD9, plus you can get all your discs from the same manufacturer. It just seems like added complexity for no real benefit.

I'm one of the 10 people that bought it lol. It was the one with the greenish cover art right? Watched it and kept it until the day I had the BD in hand, then gave it away to a friend.
I agree. Out of the 2500+ movies/TV shows/anime I've bought over the years I've watched the extras on fewer than 5, but if extras are what bring sales up to acceptable numbers then I won't complain.
I also bought the green cover Lupin dvd set. Can't remember if I bought the bluray yet

Imagine working on the US release of what’s frankly kind of just an old forgotten OVA (no offense to those who love it), only for Hideo Kojima of all people to pick up your release. Must be pretty cool.

Someone should probably tell him about the SteelBook, though

Speaking of Cyber City, is there a good chance the new scan will get a standard release eventually? I want it but I really dislike steelbooks.

I hope so. I don't need or want steelbooks in my collection and 80's/90's cel-based Anime is a key part of my collection, that I try to acquire.

I doubt there will be another release for Cyber City until they get through the rest of the upscale discs and that’s a big if. You’re better off picking up both releases, swapping discs, and selling the Frankenstein’d SteelBook on Mercari.

AL UK is hinting at a release of the new remaster, but in what form it is remains to be seen. Hopefully a standard edition so that I can put the disc in the CE.

I could maybe see a remastered standard whenever they eventually run out of stock of the original BD, but certainly not before that.
