I don't think anyone is going to be upgrading their storage anytime soon, PS5 will have the exact same issue. There aren't even any PCIe 4.0 drives rated @ PS5 speeds available at retail yet since they aren't even part of the PC scene until the end of the year.
PS5 has it worse too since it doesn't even have a 1tb drive and I don't see off the shelf parts costing any less than this expansion card. |

Granted that doesn't mean those are the expansion method Sony will go with but... As you already mentioned, there will not be any other expansion option for PS5 for a while otherwise. And with that impressive speed, I also don't foresee any expansion options being cheaper than the XSX cards. Stand alone drive or Sony "card" variety. |

Mark Cerney said that PS5 just uses SSDs you would buy for a PC just like you would have upgraded the HDD in the PS4 or PS3. The first PCIe 4 SSDs rated for PS5 will be launching at the end of the year. |

Reading this thread has made me feel better about this. The way I had read some of the material, it made it sound like external HDs weren't going to work at all for games. If it's just a matter of transferring, and not having to redownload, then I should be perfectly fine with 1TB for the foreseeable future.

Microsoft sent the expansion card to all the influencers and reviewers who received their consoles this morning.
The expansion cards are ready to go. Either Microsoft is too timid to officially announce the price point (since it's almost the price of the Series S) or they're holding off on releasing it until there's more readily available to send to retailers. |
