Xbox Series allows pre loading of games bought on disc

This is a pretty damn cool feature. Letting you keep buying physical games but gaining the benefit of pre loading like a Digital buyer.

Makes sense. Doesn't mean much to me but it will be a very nice feature for people with slow internet speeds.

Here's proof that I didn't preorder Valhalla, but I can install it through the new Xbox preload functionality. For now, you need Xbox (beta) Android app to initiate the download. Now I can either purchase a 💿 version or the digital one. Either way, the game will be ready.

The new xbox beta app for mobile just got released, check the details here, but 1 killer feature wasn't mentioned and I just tested it with multiple games basically you can download any game you want from the store regardless if you own it or not, so it's a god send for those who like to buy discs because you can preload the game and any big day 1 patch which usually goes live 3 days before launch so on launch day you just insert the disc and play immediately, also good for people who buy digital games if you are getting paid next week and planning on buying a few games you can download these games in advance and as soon as you buy them you can play immediately.

This is an awesome feature. It always sucks going to a Gamestop early release, only to wind up spending my extra gametime installing the disk. Or even when you get the package on your door. To be able to just pop a new game in and play is a GREAT feature that may end up leading to me getting my third party games on my Xbox.

But it’s not downloading the whole game. You still have to download all the gigs when it’s released.

Valhalla hasn't started its pre-load yet, because the game isn't done. When pre-load goes live for Valhalla, the whole game will install... like every other pre-load.

Just an unfortunate example used in a sense since it's not out yet.

A fantastic feature, one that will be huge for me since it takes a long time to download games on DSL. Not as big of a deal for games that would have installation discs like Red Dead Redemption 2, but still a very handy feature for most everything else if you buy most of your games on disc.

Honestly I'll probably still install from the disc just to make sure it works. But a nice feature I guess for people who only want the disc so they can sell it. I've yet to sell a game I bought.

As an aside, I really like the new functionality in being able to see all the different versions of each game on the same screen, making it easy to compare the editions. Going to save a lot of back and forth clicking and possible user errors.

Maybe, but this is still a great feature for people who still buy discs too. Some games you still can't play on release day even with the disc (or at least not for a while depending on your internet), so being able to pre-load would be great.

It's an excellent feature, and part of the reason why I went all digital this generation. Now I'm going to be more vigilant on physical sales

I used this feature with Doom Eternal for when it hits game pass next week. I'll also load up anything coming and move it to an external hard drive for the Series X launch. I'll transfer everything to the series X and should be playing most of the day rather than waiting for disc installs and downloads on launch day.

I tried going all digital, but still ended up getting physical releases at times. It was the obvious choice for games with installation discs (like RDR2) of course. Even though I do like the fact that I can load up a game without having to put the disc in (and then take it out), I'll likely get third party titles on disc for games I get on release day and then a case by case basis for others (depending on sales at the time I want it). Obviously all digital on first party titles once I add Game Pass back to my account.

This feature will be extremely helpful regardless, especially for people who wait to buy most of their games until they are on sale. I do wish that you could do this on your console instead of being forced to use the app on your phone though.
