So true. I rather say "I own _ Blu's," or "_ Blu-ray disks." HD-DVD just sounds to complicated, and if a person says "I own _ HD movies" it can mean Blu also, so they really need to say "HD-DVD", which sounds uncool. Then there's the color thing, I really think many people like Blu over red, the red packaging just looks weird. Blu has the nicest logo too.

...but, Many might prefer HD-DVD cause it actually has the term "HD" in it, would it help if the format were called "HD-Blu," or something around that.

Honestly, the name, logo and packaging had a little bit to do with my decision (besides video and sound quality being superior), and so did the company support, as I have never really loved Toshiba, I prefer Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, whatever, you all get the picture...

I fully agree. HD-DVD just sounds so nerdy and complicated. When I'm introducing friends and family members to the next big thing in home movies, Blu-ray sounds so much better than HD-DVD. And that disgusting red colour - berk!

We have blu-rays, and blu-ray players. Just like we have DVDs and DVD players. Simple. and cool. I immediately had this impression when I first read about it >3 years ago. Then as time went by, upon finding out it had more storage space, and better studio support, and the PS3 behind it, I chose the format which was both superior and would be the winning successor to DVD.

There's been a series of annoying events in this format war like Paramount being bought by HD-DVD for $150M which have slowed down Blu-ray's win. It seems like every time something's going to finally spell the end for HD-DUD, (Microsoft/Toshiba) (tries to, or does) stop it in desperation - yet - every time, Blu-ray comes back even stronger - when will they get the message?

Maybe they're all experimenting on us - or maybe Sony and Microsoft hate each other. Yeah, I think that's it.

for me it was technical specs that won me over to BD and it was the fact people had to boil the HD-DVD's to get them to work that secured me to BD, not to mention the visual issues you get due to bandwidth limitations... I remember a thread talking about some off color pixels due to a 3.3 Mbps bandwidth to accomadate the disc size lmitations.

I've been saying this for a year, but few people seem to appreciate how insignificant specifications are, and how important simple advertising messages are.

I always though HD DVD sounded too similar to DVD, and was confused with upscaling players. It's also too unpleasant to say or type, and I think that counts for a lot. It's a bit of a tongue-twister; it doesn't roll off the tongue like Blu-ray does.

Dolby Digital plus? 7.1? HDi? Who cares?

So what you are saying is, that the technical superiority, better video quality, better audio quality, studio support, manufacturer support, and technological flexibility to be used in other areas have nothing to do with why blu-ray will win?

Personally, I believe that they could have called it JesusIsALie-Ray and it would still win. But that is just me.

I think it will win because it's a better product and has been marketed better as well. And because the PS3 sold an amazing quantity of Blu Ray players.

Hearing someone say "HD-DVD" out loud a dozen times in a discussion is funny.

I've been breaking in my non-HDM-owning friends on "BD." After all, I'm not buying "Blu-Rays" (which has its own geek quotient by the sound of it); I'm buying Blu-Ray Discs.

I really do think that JesusIsALie-Ray could have caught on. We are all pretty geeky, we spend a mass amount of hours of the day on this discussing blu-ray and why it is so superior.

I have to agree that names make a difference. How many presidents have we had with 4 syllables in the last name? Doesn't look good for Gul-li-an-i. Bring on Jeb Bush.

On the other hand, if Sony had used HD DVD first, would we be defending the name, or saying it is a great technology with a sucky name? I have said before, when you take a product and stick words like "Super", "Ultra", and "Mega" in front of it, you are advertising a better version of an old technology. While blu-ray is technically new because of the laser color, density, and manufacture process.

I did have reservations with the high density and the disc scratching, but the hard coat technology sold me on it.

Yup... storage. That's why I never flinched once when choosing Blu-Ray. Every year, apps, games, movies, music, pics, videos, etc. demand more and more space. I can't believe those morons at MS but DVD9 in the 360. How f**king dumb/short sighted can you be?!

While I like the name Blu-ray better, analysts thought the name HD-DVD was better soley because it is telling you what it is in its name, which they thought would confuse customers as to what a Blu-ray disc even was/did.
