Why are our fellow citizens so slow in adopting new technology?

lol i hear ya,im a minority also and some of my co-workers who are the same as me are quick to judge on things specially with nationality.its the older people that are reaally hard to convince.

I remember the King of Queens episode, where they wanted to watch the Superbowl so bad in High Def.
I had no idea what high def was...

i guess it became first public with the PS3 & 360
and only flatscreen HDTV´s...
haven´t seen any DLP TV´s in stores until nowadays...




but HD-Medium....

look at the success here in Europe (^_^)

I will include Canada in this, but I think there are mostly two reasons
1) that negative campaigning tends to be much higher here, so many tend to go "I will wait and see if the stuff is right" (will BD fry your PC/player, are BD disks too fragile.....)
2) I think the governments are different. I find our governments tend to be more respondent to the companies then in many other countries where they tend to be more to protect the individual.


A good example of this is cell phones, look how long it took for them to become main stream here compared to Europe. But look at the difference. In Europe they decided all companies would use GSM and that companies could not lock you in. So the European consumer early on did not need to worry as much about the phone he bought, he did not like the carriers service or the carrier went belly up he just switched by getting a new Sim with the new provider and the large sum on the phone was saved. How about here? well there are several incompatible formats GSM, CDMA, TDMA, iDen the phone came with a three year contract and even if you had issues and wanted to change provider your X phone did not work with the other companies Y network so you needed to change everything.

On the other hand, let's take a different example due to the fact that the US is phasing out analog signals (business decision as well because this way the government can make more money) HDTVs are much more prevalent in the US then in Europe. Because people don’t need to fear that their expensive HDTV here will be useless.

I think in the end, in Japan where BD is 9:1 and in Europe where it is 4:1 or more it is safer for everyone to jump in and that is why you see more of it there.

i've always wondered that myself. i think it comes down to metality. americans seem to have this "hesitation" with advancement and seem to be content with "good enough". hell, there's sill dial-up being used down there!

I think part of the problem is the new tech stuff always comes to the states first. If an item makes it in the states it will make it almost anywhere. The buying power of the US and Canada is awsome. The problem is alot of stuff doesn't make it here. I know alot of people that had betamax's and lazerdisk players and basicly got stuck with them, so the buyer have become wary of new tech items.

I don't own a tivo. WRGT politics, I didn't want to refer to politics but was using it as an example. The stupidity of the general public in the US is reflected in the politics of this nation.

Great point, couldn't have said it better. Yeah Americans are cheap too...a lot of them. But working in retail it amazes at what crap people will waste tons of money on but wont wanna adapt new better things that will benefit them later on.
