USA Giallo Essentials Volume 3 (Black Edition) - July 26, 2022

Warning: The release of Smiles Before Death includes a 23-minute interview in italian without English Subtitles. Arrow's producer suggests to contact their customer service to get a replacement disc, but no replacement disc appears to exist. Please check the latest posts for any recent updates.

Update (9/29): Corrected discs are out there. There are new reports of people receiving a corrected disc when ordering direct from Arrow in the US/UK, from contacting Arrow's customer service, and at a local store in the UK.

Arrow will be releasing a third volume of their Giallo Essentials sets, and unlike the first two, this set will include all new titles:

Really looking forward to this; it's about time Arrow gave us some new gialli!

I know, right? I was about to order The Killer Reserved Nine Seats from Le chat qui fume when I got paid. Not anymore, I'll wait for this to come out.

Anyone have anything to say about the two new-to-disc movies? I really don't like Killer Reserved Nine Seats, plus I already have the CO release. If these other two are good maybe I'll try reselling it.

Cursory looks online said Smile Before Death is a crummy retread of Your Vice is a Locked Room, and the other one is kind of interesting but not very entertaining. I do like Rosalba Neri.

Re-posting this from the Arrow UK thread:

I assume you mean Camera Obscura's The Killer Reserved Nine Seats, but Cineploit in Germany is releasing Smile Before Death next month (it's been up for pre-order for about 2-3 weeks), which has English subtitles and includes a 48-minute "raw" video interview from 1995 in English with Jenny Tamburi, as well as an isolated score track. On the other hand, Cineploit apparently aren't including the extended nude scenes. I kind of wish Arrow had included the interview, but it could be really bad as Cineplot literally says it is "not to be seen as [a] produced Featurette".

So, Arrow are being a bit sneaky here. It's really only one title that will be exclusive to the Arrow set by the time it releases, and that title will miss a potentially important bonus feature, but include its own extras not on the earlier German release.

I was tempted to get the first two sets to go along with this one since I don’t already own any of the titles but I realized that all those wouldn’t come with their booklets and now I’m hesitant

Though I already have Camera Obscura's The Killer Reserved Nine Seats Blu-ray. I'm still going to order this set because it has two Giallo's that I haven't seen before.

Kat Ellingers appearances in these Arrow releases are as predictable and as wearisome as the latest covid variant. I just sampled her commentary for Torso and gave up in 10 minutes. She immediately starts moaning that Martino is treated unfairly by critics but wont look at the movie and point out why. She whines that Martino shouldn't be compered to Argento but keeps mentioning Argento. I'm heard enough of her to know that she will not stop repeating herself and will not stop name checking other directors and movies long enough look at the movie that is playing. Here she is again but I've had it.

I like her booklet essays, but I've never lasted a full commentary from her.

I'm really looking forward to this set! I am slowly acquiring all of Arrow's previous giallo releases (a shipment of gialli from a recent Unobstructed View sale should be here today or tomorrow). I'm halfway through Troy Howarth's So Deadly, So Perverse vol. 1, so I'm ready to dive into more gialli!

Yeah, her commentaries are terrible. I liked her podcast. She's smart, but her commentaries really don't tend to pay attention to anything that's going on on the screen. She's definitely not alone in that problem, she's just hired a lot.

Sometimes a video talk is better than a commentary. Tony Rayns, for instance, will sometimes do an on-target 40min essay, rather than fumble through a 100min film.

Yeah. I think that's more her strength. SHe was good at that on her podcast, and her interviews on some older discs were always fine.

Wonder what the next box color will be and what films will be in it. Personally, I'm hoping for THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH, INTERRABANG, and TOP SENSATION.

Anybody know the cheapest place to buy this? I wanted to get the Beyond the Door 2 slipcover and was wondering if it was better to combine that order with the giallo set

Grindhouse Video has it for $61.99, which I think is the cheapest I’ve seen it - https://grindhousevideo.com/products...41561732284591

The last Deep Discount 15% sale had preorders eligible (despite stating they weren’t), and the set was slightly (like $0.10) cheaper than Grindhouse with 15% off applied.

Looking at MVD's site, this set appears to have been bumped to an 8/30 release date -- probably to fix the missing subtitles on the 23-minute Stefano Amadio interview supplementing SMILE BEFORE DEATH. I know some finished copies already made it out, so expect another exchange program if you got one.

I received my copy from Grindhouse a a couple of weeks ago and can confirm that my copy does not have any subtitles for that Italian language interview
Did watch the movie which was fine with the subs and it does look really good though!

Contact Arrow. Since the set was delayed to presumably fix this, they should have replacement discs available at one point.

I think my favorite on here is SMILE BEFORE DEATH. Its colorfully sleazy early '70s vibe makes it a perfect companion piece to AMUCK! Also, it's the only film in the set that was shot in Techniscope, a format I strongly associate with the genre.
