That does indeed look practically identical. Only thing I can really notice is the image does look a tiny bit sharper, which is only noticeable if you look at the linework on the guy, or on the artifacts that are already on the JP master, which looks a tiny bit sharper on the UK disc.

My eyes aren’t as good as some of you guys but the US release looks pretty good especially compared to the UK release. Guess I won’t hesitate to pick it up since I didn’t want to spend $40 for just one movie.

Friend mentioned there are some color differences and other things still but I am no expert either. The US version does only have two audio tracks though ENG/ENG and JP/JP without the mixed music tracks like the UK release (though their video quality is a lot worse)

I'll wait for my final judgement until there's more screenshots but here's what I see:

• There's a very slight green tint to the picture.
• Some artifact is present.
• Gama is identical.
• No detail seems to be lost(no blurring like in AUS/UK release).

What's the verdict on Utena so far, for those who've gotten the first set?

There's gonna be a lot of people pitching a fit over the differences in Funimation's Your Name release compared to the Japanese, but with the UK release being unreasonably botched in major ways, a couple small differences like some artifacts and an off tint are a small price to pay for not being eye cancer. It's reasonably similar enough to the Japanese BD, and I'm happy with that. Feel free to disagree, but that's just my takeaway.

So we've discovered in the Your Name thread that the color shift seems to be coming from the master that was sent out from Japan rather than a usual FUNi problem.

This color shift has been confirmed to also be on the AUS/UK, TW, and HK release.

Most anime aren't ever made at full 1080p, that much is known. But what resolutions are they produced at? Well, this guy named 'anibin' has found a way to figure out the original resolution of production.

I don't understand how he does it, but I've gathered the resolutions based on studios to help determine what your favourite shows were produced at:

Ufotable- 1280x855
OLM- 1280x810
David Production- 1280x720
J.C. Staff- 1280x900 or 1920x1080
MAPPA- 1280x810
GoHands- 1920x1080
Production I.G- 1280x864
Statelight- 1280x871
PA Works- 1280x720
Silver Link- 1280x810
Trigger- 1280x806
White Fox- 1280x720
Wit Studio- 1280x857 or 1280x915 or 1280x719
Sunrise- 1280x720 or 1280x800 or 1280x810 or 1280x837 (inconsistent, through mostly 720p)
Shaft- 1280x720
Studio Deen- 1280x918 or 1280x873 (that’s the one they use the most)
Pierrot- 1280x720 or 1280x810
Brain’s Base- 1280x720

Anibin is useless nonsense. What they do is evaluate the line art for TV broadcasts and make random assumptions based off of the broadcast master, which isn't the actual production master that things are made to, and don't take into account the compositing process or other details. There's video showing that Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions was composited at 1080p for the main story, but anibin's method says that random 955.5p for whatever reason. The exact methodology regarding the determination of line art sounds great in theory, but when it produces false information consistently when we know the resolution of shows, it's not to be trusted as an actual resource. There's a fair amount of people on reddit and 4ch who ignore these errors and treat anibin as a credible source when they're not.

It did seem odd that KyoAni was listed at 955.5p, but the unfortunate reality is there is very little creditable sources we can trust. I feel stupid for believing this nonsense, but it does provide context on how little we know about production.

I remember you wrote a great article on it, and I advise everyone read it. The KyoAni examples work because they are well documented, but unless every series has behind-the-scenes videos (which they don't), we won't know for certain.

A lot of my information comes from interviews and professional resources like AnimeStyle (a production-oriented magazine series that interviews creators and goes into depth on various aspects of productions like the 3D layouts for New Game! (not in the show, but setting up the characters in actual space to make it feel more realistic) or the use of color in Your Lie in April). Sadly a lot of it is a "oh, I found this reference at this time" situation, so I don't recall a lot of specific examples outside of highly memorable ones.

The language barrier is something that prevents a lot of fans from understanding the production details we'd like to know, so I like to try and break that down whenever possible. That's why I'm happy to be a part of Sakuga Blog, where every writer does a lot of research and has a lot of knowledge about what they write about. As I'm not well-versed on the sakuga part of animation, I also learn a fair amount from the others.
