Yeah, to December 31st. Dang, I thought they'd finally start shipping it today. Time to cancel and redo my November and December orders at TRSI, so that the Shirobako movie (which is already in stock) switches places with Only You.

So there are two more movies, correct? Will we get the series before or after them?

I think there's a good chance we get the OVA series next after the movies. 195 episodes is a big commitment, even though I am hoping we do get it sometime.

Dunno, but if you like Urusei Yatsura, just keep buying them and the release of the TV series will come shortly after. Movie sales will, hopefully, justify the TV series, which I can't imagine its license being cheap

Going by the scenario if all the films end up selling well, late 2022 or early 2023 would be my best guess. They're probably already working on approvals for the OVAs and maybe the TV series, and like they said yesterday during their panel, it's a very long process compared to their other licenses.
Glad I gave away my 50 volume DVD set. Took up so much god damn shelf space. The Viz books have better picture quality than those atrocious DVDs lmao. Last edited by Academyratio; 12-15-2021 at 12:03 PM. |

Buy the movies if you want the TV series, it's that simple.

Even though I am not big on the 4th movie, I will still get it along with everything else Urusei Yatsura, hope we will get the TV series and OVAs.

I'm in the same boat with Case Closed. I'll basically buy anything Discotek puts out to help support the series on Blu-ray. The only thing I haven't bought is the Lupin/Conan special because I haven't gotten into Lupin.

Are the UY movies like the Ranma 1/2 movies where they take place after the TV series? Or do they do a good job breaking things down for a new viewer?

Pretty sure they are interspersed throughout, you kind of need to see at least the first season of UY to know the characters. I remember I watched Beautiful Dreamer without having watched anything else back in the day and was kind of lost, by the end of the movie you kind of get up to speed on what the characters are about and can still enjoy the movie (since the plot doesn't require any previous knowledge) but after I watched the TV show then rewatched it it made way more sense since they drop you in expecting to already be familiar with the characters.

I'm curious if Discotek has access to any of the original stems and if AnimEigo saved their raw voice track for UY4. Both the Japanese track and English track on that DVD sound rough. But on the English dub, the voices are crystal-clear while all of the other elements sound terrible. Meaning the problems were with the sources they were provided, which then got baked into their English mix.

Yup, that's correct. Central Park Media dubbed Beautiful Dreamer (the second film) back in the 90s at TAJ, and AnimEigo dubbed the rest in the early 2000s with a different cast at Swirl.

The movies are mostly original stories, and don't slot in anywhere specific. Only Final Chapter is substantially a manga adaptation.

Yeah, Final Chapter actually felt like a series finale more then the last TV episode did.
