As long as they don't go grotesque with designs... I think Villeneuve will try to push realism as much as the source allows. Diametric opposition to what Jodorowski wanted to do.

That won't happen until Ritrovita restore it in fifty years time.

Those designs strike a nice balance between the Lynch film and the television series. Just don't go the same route that Lynch did with Baron Harkonnen... Also interested in how they are going to design the Sardaukar, as i wasn't impressed with the bizarre design in the tv series, and the 'Atomic binmen' from Lynch looked like a last-minute design decision...

I was thinking the same thing. Jodorowski's designs were a bit too... interesting. Great documentary, though

Never saw the Lynch film. The concept never interested me and haven't had urge to read the books just cuz I have way too many to get into before I get into a series.

Kind of want to see the Lynch film more and more as this one happens along. Just.. I dunno. I'm not a fan of what designs I saw from that film. I'm not even sure what I would end up seeing considering it was a mess of a production there.

What say, you lot? If I had to see the film.. what are my choices and in what format?

Why would you still want to watch Lynch's version if you're interested in neither the concept nor the visuals? Just leave it alone.

I've been a fan of Lynch's Dune ever since I saw it as a kid. Designs are gaudy indeed, but I never got confused or confounded by what I wound up seeing--it's a space fantasy to the core and the basic plot isn't that hard to grasp. Dune's universe has always been a strange, otherworldly place with a touch of the exotic, and Lynch's film has all those same qualities, just not in the way one would expect--he focused a lot more on a dreamy quality with occasional grotesqueness, and that's what makes everything look so grungy and uncanny.

I'd say just rent it and see how far you get. If you are willing to plop money down on a Blu-Ray, I think the German CE edition (two discs, theatrical and extended cuts) is the best available option. For a first-time watch, stick with the theatrical cut--the extended is unofficial (Lynch even had his name removed from it). It has some nice scenes worth seeing, but the changed prologue, recycled shots, censored scenes, and unfinished SFX are horrid.

If you are a big reader, the book is worth reading. A little dense and wordy for my tastes, but it's been a while and I really need to see how it holds up now that I'm older and wiser. The Sci-Fi channel miniseries is a more faithful adaptation to the book and is worth seeing for the storytelling, but the cheap SFX and production design can be hard to swallow. Its sequel, Children of Dune is a grade better.

Cuz I can? As I said, the more this one moves along... the more interested to see Lynch's version. Just to see what was done w/ it and taking it into context. Film is fun to me.

I wouldn't worry about cinematography much, because majority of it is on Villeneuve. Plus Fraser is a solid DP.

Villeneuve has proven himself to be a visual savant with or without Deakins, and I loved Greig Fraser's work on Rogue One and Lion.

But he still gives freedom to his DP though, most obvious with Arrival. So the look can change.
