My copy arrived today. I'm not expecting DNR to be an issue here because the series was (presumably) shot digitally. Plus, I don't see "Super Clean Picture" anywhere on the packaging. Too bad this was cancelled prematurely - I thought it was (is) excellent.

SG-1 seasons 8 - 10 was shot digitally as well and VEI still applied DNR. So I would be careful about making any assumptions...

Then, of course, there's the audio issue to watch out for.

Does anyone know if there are subtitles and if the Blu-ray are region locked?

I got this in the mail today, and at a quick glance the video quality looks good. I still want to compare with my existing S1 Blu-ray, but so far I'm not noticing any video issues I'd be concerned with. As far as the audio side though, it's a bit more disappointing. All audio tracks are AC3 only, and unfortunately the surround tracks have the same issue the SG1 set did where it's actually the stereo track expanded weird.

Does it at least have an alternate track like SG-1? What audio tracks does it have?

Where did you order from? Directly from VEI? And, if so, how good is their packing?

Thanks!

Damn it VEI, what the hell are you doing? Sigh. I guess this means the new SGA set probably has the same issue as well. Good thing I own the original release. This is ridiculous.

Picked up my set at the Post Office today.

Initial impressions:
-- One disc played with no issues on my Region B BD player. Assume region free.
-- Files for season 2 were authored in September 2020. Average file size per episode is 7.6GB, five episodes per disc.
-- Season one files are around 6.6GB, up to six episodes per disc.
-- English subtitles, no other languages
-- Season 2 Extras play at 1080p24 // could have been upconverted
-- I don't have a sound system so can't speak to the 5.1 issue, but the episodes have three tracks... Eng stereo, Eng "5.1", and Eng commentary

Season one has two discs with six episodes per disc as a result of disc one having just the individual parts of Air then the three episodes combined cut.

Later today I'll try and take compare and contrast screenshots from a season 1 episode from Fox/MGM vs VEI and a season 2 episode from VEI vs an OTA recording from when season 2 was syndicated on KCAL-TV in Los Angeles.

I have the original North American Stargate Universe complete season 1 on Bluray bought back in 2012.
Can anyone tell me if it was region locked to A or was it region free(B). I still have it sealed in its wrapper.

The 1.0 discs (1-2) are Region A locked, and the 1.5 discs (3-5) are Region Free.

Default 2x15 -- "Seizure" comparison

Nine compare and contrast screencaps from "Seizure", sourced from KCAL-TV (in 2012, a "reference source" for MPEG2 broadcast HD) and VEI. No signs of zooming/cropping as reported from the SG-1 release.

Detail/compression is definitely better on the Blu, Cap 5 being a good example.
Does look a bit DNR'd, but that might just be the lower quality/macroblocking of the HDTV version that makes it seem like that.
Overall, looks great!

Will be interesting to see Season 1 compared to the old Blu!

Default 1x15 -- "Lost" comparison

This is probably the most "unfair" apples to apples comparison to make. The Fox-MGM BD gives the final 6 episodes of season 1 room to breathe, with three episodes per dual layer disc. But, it also provides the greatest chance for contrasting the differences. The MGM-Fox version of "Lost" is 12.3GB, vs 6.35GB with VEI. In each set of imagines, the original MGM-Fox release is displayed first, followed by the VEI version. There was around a 2.5 second difference in run time. Extra steps for those hoping to mux the VEI eps with 5.1 AC3 audio.

[Show spoiler]

While my laptop was working on this episode, I watched the last ten mins or so of "Air, Part 2". The MGM-Fox BD has a pretty noticeable jump up in PQ with more detail. Another point to note... in addition to the 3-in-1 expanded version of "Air", the MGM-Fox has the original aired version of "Air", where the first two episodes were combined, followed by Part 3 a week later. VEI has the 3-in-1 expanded version, along with "Air" in three individual episodes. That said, the VEI PQ in general seems above that of your average Mill Creek release.

Unsure what to think of these ones. Some pictures literally look exactly the same, just with the grain removed.

Some places do seem to look better, eg. Cap 7. You can make out the straps on her helmet easier, and it does seem ever so slightly more detailed.

Though I do admit some do look notably worse, eg. Cap 9.

Don't know if it's just my monitor, or just needing to see it on a bigger screen.

Would you possibly be able to make a few comparison caps for that episode, if not a problem.

A bit confused at this part. Let me see if this is correct.

MGM-Fox:
3-in-1 Expanded
Part 1-2 combined

VEI:
3-in-1 Expanded
Parts One, Two and Three individually

?

I'll try and get to "Air" tomorrow. And yes, you're correct on the "Air" versions. Apologies it wasn't clear.

I have it on iTunes, but I'm not sure how/if I can take screenshots what with their horrid DRM and all.

Default "Air" extended screencap comparison

As requested, 10 caps from the extended 3-in-1 "Air".

First is Fox, followed by VEI. The 3-in-1 Fox episode is 20.9GB, the VEI 18.2GB.

[Show spoiler]

Despite the relative parity in file size, I'd say Fox is the clear winner in PQ.
