Default Lord of the Rings (Ralph Bakshi version)

I recently purchased "Fire and Ice" and after doing so and looking up Ralph Bakshi online I realized he did "Lord of the Rings" which comes out on Blu Ray April 6th. I am super excited about this release and it is a day one buy for me. Is anyone else excited about it? Please post your comments.

The first review I saw of the BD was not very positive about the picture quality. I do not believe I have seen this movie in its entirety. I have a vague recollection of watching it years ago.

Just so you know it does NOT cover the entire story.

Well yeah I know that. It's just the first part of three. I'm not too anal about PQ and AQ unless it's a movie I really love. Plus at a $20 price point at release I don't mind. I'm an art major so I really appreciate the illustration and backdrops. So no one is going to buy?

I will pick it up when or if the price drops. If it were going to be a loaded disc with lots of extras or if the pq/aq were outstanding then $20 would be a steal, but since that doesn't seem to be the case I'm going to wait awhile on this one.

Why didn't they ever release part 2?

They had no money. I won't be picking this up because there is massive mistakes throughout and i really hate the way Boromir looks like a viking.

Part 1 was a box office failure and Bakshi never got to make his intended part 2, however there was a cheap 1980 TV sequel made by Rankin and Bass called The Return of The King (which I have never seen). This was meant as a genuine (heavily compromised) sequel to Bakshi's film, but it had really kiddy animation and was not cinema quality.

You do realise everyone is talking about the animated LOTR right???

On topic, I don't hate this movie but I don't really see myself getting the Blu-ray unless I find it ultra cheap sometime down the road

I had a nice coupon (mentioned in other threads) from WB because of an order delay earlier in the year... so I was able to pick up the Trilogy + Animated for just under $60 after tax... essentially making this animated movie about $14, so I picked it up.

I know it ends rather abruptly in the middle of the story... but I still remember seeing it in the theaters when I was a kid.. so I wanted to have it.

Haven't watched yet.. but was a bit disappointed to see the Bakshi movie only comes with a Windows (non-iTunes) digital copy... while the trilogy comes with iTunes compatible copies.

I would have liked to have the animated one on my Mac as a digital copy.

Same here. I have the DVD version and I will buy the BD for nostalgic reasons, but it has to be cheap.

It's a Warner catalog up-dump with no extras, so it will be. ($19.99 MSRP)

I might buy it just for the few things it did right compared to Peter Jackson (and because the Peter Beagle script had a cuddlier 70's-fantasy-fan feel than Fire & Ice), but I'd have to keep my eye on the top Amazon-bargains bar, as it would have to be cheap enough.

I'm thinking that my magic number will be $10.00. Curious as to why Warner waited to release this title the same day as the trilogy. Wouldn't they have sold more if they marketed it a month earlier?

There's actually a brand new featurette on it, so it's no exactly featureless (though, in current Warner Bros. fashion, the trailer from the DVD has been dropped... ).

Yep that would be my cut off price for it as well, won't happen for a while but that is quite alright

Maybe not... My thinking is that they figure releasing it the same week as the trilogy might convince more people to buy them both at the same time.

If you weren't a kid when this came out in theaters originally, chances are you probably don't even remember it existed... especially once the live-action movies came out.

So I actually think it is smart to release them both the same day. It worked for me, as I ordered both together.
