You have a great start, I'd say go with 5.1.4 atmos. You have the rear height, and 2 more for top middle and you're ready to ROCK

That's right, there are five speakers across the front (including the effects/presence) and three across the back.

Problem is, they are all timbre-matched Mirage Omni which are no longer available.

In Atmos terms, that is 3.1.5, surely? I'm not sure that is even doable in the home.

Either way, to convert that to good Atmos, a bit of major rethinking is required. You need ear-height rears.

3.1.5? Is that how the speaker layouts are defined now? (rear.sub.front?)

Anyway, I can't have ear-height. This is an open-concept cottage. Kinda committed to what I have now.

I suppose if I could find more of the OmniFX speakers (or something with a good timbre match), I can ceiling mount a few more. Actually, I have Polk 70-RT mounted in the kitchen that sound surprisingly good.

Rears:

3 - front. 1 - sub. 5 - Atmos.

If you mix rear Atmos and rear surrounds at the same height you'll surely have a muddled mess.

Very awkward layout for Atmos unless you were willing to have a total rethink on placements.

6.1 won't integrate with Atmos, only 5.1 or 7.1 core surround layouts are supported as far as I'm aware.

Cool, thanks. I have way too much invested to even consider starting over and I am still very happy with the sound from this system. I was just wondering if I had an upgrade path for “someday”.

I'm currently saving up to upgrade to an Atmos / 4K set-up.

I can easily go 5.1.2 but will probably end up going 7.1.2 by the end. That's all I am able to do at my place. Atmos is fantastic. I'm addicted to Dolby Cinema.

So the old RX-Z1 decided to self-destruct and I replaced it with an RX-A3080. Decided on adding another pair of speakers after all and go with 5.1.4. (rear center now a decoration). I originally wanted to flush-mount one into the fireplace but I compromised with my wife on a pair of bookshelves on stands (Axiom M3s):

Now I've gotta fish some cables and mount jacks. Hopefully have that done before the speakers arrive (early next week).

Dude, you were so right about those ear-height surround speakers - what a difference! I used an analog mixer to matrix the rear surround channels so I ended up with 6.1.4

Noob question, that I can PROBABLY guess the general answer to, but....

HOW badly would sound proof foam paneling on the ceiling impact Atmos? (From soundbars or speakers). Since I imagine that sound absorption would kill the ability to bounce back down.

I'm just trying to think of ways to improve how much sound is coming up from the basement into the living room that DOESN'T involve tearing out the basement ceiling and installing better/different insulation.
