I go every year and for a couple of years I know you dressed up as Thor, I think, right? Not to sound creepy but if I had ever seen you I would have said hello.

I only get Sunday tickets because I prefer "smaller" crowds. LOL

I go nuts for indie comics. I always walk out with a few full-run series.

my Daughter and i are both making some big changes to our outfits. i will post some progress pictures as we work on them.

also, if any of you forum members will be at NYCC let us know here, perhaps we can meet up for a meet & greet and post a picture here!

none of you know that I used to have a nice business when I lived in NY as an airbrush artist. I did lots of sci-fi fantasy work on shirts and jacket.

one of the two Gamora looks my Daughter is doing is this Gamora below

and what we are doing, is getting her a white "cat suit" and i'm gonna airbrush the armor details onto it.

I've broken out my old gear. yep folks, that a Jun-Air silent air compressor system and those in the know, yeah, it's like

IMG_0429.jpg

i've got quite the assortment of Iwata airbrushes at my disposal, all the gear works perfectly. i've got my paints and everything else i need. my Daughter will model the suit while i airbrush it in her to make sure shapes match contours of body. i am also airbrushing parts of my outfit as well.

for her catsuit, i will post progress pictures here from untouched suit, to start, to midway to rough finish. the final product will be shown at NYCC of course! it's gonna be one hellova undertaking, but, i'm sure my airbrush muscle memory is up to the task.

I will of course keep you guys updated on this process.

So we got started today and boy was it a doozy! What a long day it was. I was reminded of how old I am. I was cramped up for hours working that airbrush. I realized once we set up, I actually had no idea of how I was gonna do it. Itís been almost 20 years since I airbrushed anything!

Ok, enough of my b!tching about my old ass airbrushing for hours and my aching ass! So here is where weíre at:

The start

Then after laying down said grey base layer, we moved a bit further into time on the project.

We began the layers of the costume that were black. I used 4oz of black paint in total.

So, we now have the first layer of black down on the lower half of the costume. I realized this is the first time Iíve airbrushed such a large item that was worn by a person while doing it. Pain and all, my Daughter and I were having a blast!

Lastly we incorporated more black to the outfit and also added the red highlights too

In the next week or two, Iíll add some purple and airbrush some shadow highlights onto the catsuits armor. It was a lot of work for both of us. My Daughter had to stand the entire day and pose as I needed her too while I airbrushed the outfit.

Like I said before, many years since Iíve airbrushed anything. No, itís not perfect and I wish I had thought of different ways to do it, but we wanted to give it a shot. we think, the Gamora airbrushed armor turned out pretty damn good so far!

I will now focus some time on my outfit as Iím making changes to it. Some of those changes will be airbrushed too

Right now, Iím working on the single most important part, a cape attachment system. Iíll explain more in another post.

So Iíve done some work to the cape attachment system. That is the most difficult part of this outfit. Two years ago I had a professionally made cape for cosplay. Itís beautiful, itís also very heavy. It weighs close to 10lbs, no shit, itís heavy. Itís lined and made for durability and presentation.

The cape has an elastic banding system that would criss-cross the front torso to the back then snap together. Then you would put an outfit over top of it and it gets pulled put. Problem is, itís very uncomfortable and it has cut lines across my front and back while wearing it that way. Not to mention that during NYCC I wear it for 12-15hrs per day for two days.

So Iím always trying to figure out how best to make a system so I donít have to wear it that way. Believe it or not, it takes several months for those lines across my body to finally go away. I can thank all my time in the gym for that as Iím rather broad across the top and taper down to the waist.

Iím not sure if this will even work like Iíve been planning and scheming. I wonít know until almost the entire outfit is done as I still have ti cut and create the shoulder pieces out of EVA foam as thatís part of the system.

So I used 2Ē nylon strap belt material. Two sections front and back by each shoulder. I used my trusty snap tool to install multiple snaps onto the straps. They are 10Ē each, folded over to 5Ē then slid to put the collarbone are sandwiched between then they re attach d to the shirt. Helping me out through this is my trusty assistant Rick; anybody know why I call him Rick?

AA064B8A-1024-4A23-8807-C1D986BB0256.jpg

I slid a rolled up white paper towel so that itís easier for you to see. The cape slides through those two straps from front to back, then loops back over itself and re-snaps onto the strap top.

Next Iíll give you a peek at the temp fitting of the cape utilizing the attachment system.

So after all that work, I was brainstorming with my Daughter and I think I/we found a better way to attach the cape.

I did a quick temp test and it shows lots of promise. Iíll keep you guys posted.

Just so you understand, Rick was no help at all to me. Despite my talking to him this afternoon while working.

So, while Iím awaiting a delivery from Prime, I decided to get going on the shoulder pieces of the outfit. My character, The BrOdinson is based on the Silver Age version of Thor. Part of his body armor is the large standout and protecting shoulder sections.

I have fashioned a pair of those shoulder pieces from EVA foam. This is the same foam that most cosplayers use to build armor, weapons, etc. my use for these pieces are simple, single cut pieces.

They will attach to the spandex body with clothing/device snaps. The snaps are incorporated onto pieces of 2Ē wide nylon strap commonly found on bad straps and handles, watch bands etc.

The first two pictures shows unmade snaps and the snap compression tool. The second picture is of the completed nylon strap section with the straps installed.

96F285D3-089C-4D54-9D67-9456D34FE539.jpg

The next picture shows the underside of the EVA pad if you look carefully at the bottom you will see a cross hatched pattern scored onto the foam. That is done so the strap can be attached to it. The foam is heated to slightly open up the scoring, then, hot glue is applied to the scored area then the strap will be attached to it. The other part of the snap that will engage and lock to the glued section will be put directly onto the spandex top, then the shoulder pieces get snapped onto the outfit. The snaps will not be seen as they are placed and engaged on the underside of the piece.

The cut corners will be sanded to smoothness, then several layers of primer is sprayed onto each Sodexo seal it and allow it to be painted.
They will be airbrushed with opaque Black, two layers, then for protection of wear and UV effects, several layers of matte clear acrylic sealer top coat to protect the foam and the paint.

When I do that, Iíll post pictures of each stages of prep.

Snaps installed on shirt front and back to hold the shoulder pieces. I tested the nylon pieces as and engaged the ďsnapsĒ to mate with the shirt.

Having verified male/female snaps match up and engage properly, I will next attach the strapped snap sections onto the shoulder pieces then do another test. If that goes well, next up for the shoulder pieces would be sanding, priming, painting and clear coat sealing.

So far, so good!
