That's disappointing to hear about the PQ on these, especially since I sold off my blu-ray steelbooks in anticipation of this release. I'll probably go pick up this set just so I can have the films back in my collection, but hopefully down the line Universal will give these films the remasters they deserve.

But if UHD looks worse than Blu-ray, then something is clearly wrong, right?
Nothing to do with your comment, it's for people who keep carping on about DIs not getting rebuilt in 4K, and not just in this thread. But, if you'd care to look below the comment of mine you selectively quoted, you'll find the part where I literally acknowledged that aiming complaints at Universal's treatment of these Cornetto flicks separate from the 4K rebuild issue is absolutely fair game

For what it's worth, I skimmed through all the 4K discs against my prior Blu-ray set and HD-DVDs and this new 4K set is a noticeable upgrade in clarity, color, and contrast. I mean, for $35, it's well worth the upgrade...

Any comments on the new DTS:X tracks? My set is in the mail, so I guess I’ll find out soon for myself, but after all this depressing reading I was hoping that at least the sound would be worth the upgrade.

Important question - where does one shelve this in an alphabetical collection?

C for Cornetto? T for Three Flavors? P to call a psychiatrist to deal with my OCD?

It doesn't fit in an alphabetical collection. It does however fit perfectly in a sensible regular person collection..... right next to Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim.

I was going to say that I usually separate my "collections" out BEFORE the individual movies/releases on my shelves. But, even then I still order the alphabetically....so...I'm still lost on this one as well.

I store my collection in a ranking-style system from my most favorite movie to my least favorite (they're all favorites, though!). I spend 8-hours a day constantly shifting the placements to keep up with my ever-changing tastes.

I'd put it with the first released movie, so the S's... since they're not actually related movies, I personally wouldn't put it in a "collection" style. I only do that with Marvel since they're all connected, and Ghibli because I can never keep that order straight from memory. If I bought a bunch of multi-movie theme/director/actor sets, I'd probably just start putting them separate since you can't really put them in a good enough shelving system.

That's why I hate bundles for movies that are not related (I'm talking about you, Practical Magic / The Witches of Eastwick!). And even then, I'd much prefer individual in case more come out, like how Legally Blonde had a collection of 1 and 2, but now a 3rd is coming out next year...

I guess SotD is improved over the Blu-Ray by virtue of being a newer transfer from whatever film source they used (IP? O-neg?) and the technicians not messing it up, even if it isn't necessarily a knock-out transfer. But how do you mess up on films that (I assume) have pretty high quality DIs already? Just as Universal has used ancient masters for many of their catalogue Blu-Rays, they're also messing up many of their 4K discs.

Just finished Shaun. The DTS-X track is outstanding. Some really good moments in the overheads. Surrounds too. Queen sounds wonderful, especially You're My Best Friend at the close. On to Hot Fuzz...

The video quality is a solid upgrade from the Blu-ray. However, keep in mind, that two-thirds of the way through the movie, the PQ gets kinda weird. Color timing, focus, contrast gets a bit wonky. Which is exactly like the Blu. And obviously inherent in the old master used for this upscale to 4K. But, even the wonky parts still look better on the UHD disc.
