I think this movie and The Final Terror are similar.
I might give JBD the edge for the fact that characterization and the dialogue is more consistent Both of these movies are more of survival movies as opposed to all out horror movies. Which isn't a problem if you have good characters. It's one reason why Deliverance is a classic while neitther of these movies connected when they came out. |

I can't decide which film I enjoy more, JBD or Final Terror. I love both (both are in my top 5 favorite horror films). I think FT has a slight edge because of the soundtrack but both of these films are highly atmospheric, and very effective, thanks in large part to how they were shot and scored. There's a brief sequence in FT where the group are approaching the campsite and the scene where the bus is on a curved dirt road and shrouded in darkness by trees despite the fact that it's obviously daytime is a perfect example. And in JBD, after the RV hits something on the way to the campsite and the group gets out to investigate, there's a creepy moment after everyone heads back to the camper except the driver's gf. She stays behind b/c she thinks she heard a noise behind her. She moves some brush aside and stares into darkness. These little flourishes define the films for me.

I quite enjoy The Final Terror, but Just Before Dawn is at least a tier above it.

I enjoy Just Before Dawn and The Final Terror both a hell of a lot. And both more than Deliverance. I wish I could enjoy Rituals as much. But it just descends too deeply into incoherence. Visually AND plot-wise.
If I had to choose...I'd put Just Before Dawn a HAIR over The Final Terror but...as early 80s slashers go ..they're both great.. |

I can see that. It's got a uniqueness to it that makes me WANT to like it more. And Hal Holbrook (RIP) acts his ass off in it. It's just that it gets murkier and murkier....in every way possible until I'm not really certain what I was supposed to have taken from it. I can see how that very thing would be in the plus column for some folks. Just not me..
