Honestly you have an excellent one.

3D you need to get DLP for best experience.

In the fall we will see some upgrades of 3D to dlp 4k projectors like the BenQ HT8050/HT9050. Once that happens those will probably be best under 10k.

Just out of curiosity, are 1080p projectors really 1080p for 3D?

Or are they half-rez like old 1080p 3D TVs?

That Benq is full HD in 3D and I agree,it is a good one especially considering the price,I have it and love it.

They are full fledged 1080p. DLP is only projection tech that does 3D well though. Lcd/lcos have either crosstalk and/or flicker that spoils the effect.

DLP tech is only front projection tech that does 3D right - no flicker, no crosstalk, no headaches, no eyestrain... The BenQ HT2050 is the best value for 3D projection cinema today - no crosstalk and high refresh rates results in perfect 3D.

I agree with ruined, I ran a benq 1070 for years and picked up a 3050 basically just to
see the difference if any. there's zero cross talk on these projector's. great color right
out of the box and super sharp picture. I had herd that the latest gens were sharper
which I found hard to believe but they are. but it's only noticeable from a couple feet
away. the 3050's focus is absolute across the entire screen. these low budget
projector's blow any theater out of the water when set up correctly on a fixed frame.
If you don't have 5'000 grand plus to spend on a projector, DLP is the only way to go.

Have you seen the Sony project 3D, or are you basing your observations on the general merits of each technology? Because all of the reviews I've read for it so far mention that crosstalk is minimal to nonexistent. Plus, I'd be buying it for more than just 3D, and in 2D, the Sony is apparently a significant upgrade (particularly with contrast ratio).

I have seen their over $15,000 4K model which is quite a few notches ahead.

The 3D is nowhere near even a $500 BenQ W1070 IMO, though your sensitivity to flicker and crosstalk will determine if you like the Sony output or not.

That's not a knock on Sony or this projector, its just that when you compare the 3D of any LCOS/LCD to any DLP the difference is huge. There is either crosstalk, flicker, or both - while the DLP is flawless. The best LCOS at crosstalk is the JVC RS620, but it has a nasty 48hz flicker. The Epson LS10500 on the other hand has a nice 60hz/eye refresh, but suffers from significant crosstalk. I've never seen an LCOS which could emulate DLP in terms of 3D.

DLP of course has other disadvantages like black level, but for 3D there really is no comparison even with a budget model.

I own the Sony 45es and I don't have any of the issues you've described. I watched Dredd 3D on it and it was awesome all the way through. Granted I haven't seen a DLP projector in action for 3D, but the Sony gives great 2D/3D experiences.DLPs also give that rainbow effect, which is a big negative for me.

Don't know how much they differ concerning 3D playback but I own the HW55ES model and I'm very, very satisfied with the 3D (and 2D also), no flicker whatsoever (unless you look at other light sources e.g. the display on your receiver or smart phone ). Before I watch a 3D movie, I usually watch some trailers first for like 20 minutes or so, let the PJ heat up a bit. After that crosstalk is almost a non issue and if there is any, it's negligible IMO.

I have never seen a DLP home projector in action though so I can't comment on that.

Reviving an old thread... Do DLP projectors still plague people sensitive to the "rainbow effect", or have they evolved past that?

I opted for an Epson 3020 a few years ago because of my sensitivity to seeing rainbows with DLP.

All single chip DLP projectors exhibit the Rainbow effect.

Lots of people don't notice it or don't find it bothers them but its there and its inherent in the technology.

Have only heard good things about the 3D on the latest batch of JVC projectors.

I always heard that the Rainbow effect was due to the color wheel. My single chip DLP unit uses 3 different colored led laser light sources and avoids the color wheel.

I don't think I could see the rainbow effect even with a color wheel.

Well if you dont see the RBE then you're not going to see it.

I went to view the Optoma HD90 when it first came out (i think this was their first home theatre LED projector) and was disappointed that I could still see rainbows in the image.

The only DLP projectors that don't exhibit it are the proper 3 chip model.
