Japan How to ask Walt Disney Studios Japan for Eng subtitles on future MCU 3D-BDs

Hi all,

As discussed elsewhere, the new MCU movies are only being released in 3D blu ray in Japan.

These include English audio option. However they don’t include a subtitle track for non-English audio displays English subtitles. E.g. Chinese language dialogue within parts of the Shang-Chi Japan 3D blu-ray.

Those subtitle tracks (display only English subtitles for non English audio) are actually prepped for Western blu ray releases anyway but the subtitle track isn’t being added to Japan 3D MCU blu ray discs. It is less needed for the native Japanese speaking audience who may want Japanese subtitles or audio across all movie on Japan discs…

For the English speaking importing audience this is not ideal, and puts some off importing 3D MCU discs (if import cost hadn’t already put them off) from places such a Amazon Japan and YesAsia.

There are some clunky workarounds discussed in threads e.g. switch subtitles to English track on/off for parts of movie (clunky and disruptive to viewing experience IMO), have English’s subtitles on all dialogue of movie (some people including me don’t like this, use of an OPPO blu-ray player which plays subtitle tracks from a USB stick (players not available to all 3D Blu ray watchers). Or burning own versions with subtitle track. I use an Oppo player but would prefer the discs had subtitle track required. Many of the new MCUs (Dr Strange 2, Shang Chi, Black Widow ending part etc) have had excellent 3D conversions in my view

Any idea on how to ask Walt Disney Studios Japan to add the ‘non English dialogue only displays English subtitles’ for future releases (antman quantumania onwards given too late for films already released, and probably late for wake day forever).

I am not a Japanese speaker and only tool is Google translate app, which may help drafting of a message.

Anyone know: How are Walt Disney Studios Japan contacted?

Anyone have ideas or can find out right contact details.

And is this Twitter account legitimate ? : https://twitter.com/waltdisneystudi?lang=en-GB

Also my thought is maybe if Walt Disney Studios Japan see there is an importing audience and are contacted by more persons (such as from within this forum), maybe they’d consider adding the required subtitle track to MCU 3D releases. If this thread identifies method to make this request to right place, perhaps some others would wish to send similar feedback to Disney Walt Disney Studios Japan

My first suggestion is to quit worrying about translating to Japanese.

Write the post in English and my guess is a good % of anyone who works at Disney Japan communicates in English better than a large % of English first language employees of US companies. Whatever the reason that's been my experience with most large corporations in EU, Korea, and Japan (and quite a few smaller companies)

The exact address to start with I can't help so much/good/well (thanks Andy)

My expectations would be for them to respond very nicely, pass it along to an appropriate department for discusssio, and end up doing nothing to appease the 100 or couple hundred customers from US/CA/UK/Aus who buy a particular title. OTOH, it can't hurt to ask

Dude, the movies are for the Japanese market. We already did what you're asking.

The solution is to have a player that supports external subs or you have to burn a BD disc with those subtitles.

Thanks for those replies. Agree my thinking is it can’t help to ask, even if doesn’t lead to change!

Jardlonio, you mention some of this my have been done. If writing to Walt Studios Japan has been done, do you (or anyone else) know how to write to or email to Walt Studios Japan (eg a contact us webpage -potentially Japanese webpage…)?

Here's the forum thread where we started to contact Disney Japan:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...323946&page=11

On page 13 is where the page to contact Disney Japan was shared with the rest of the members:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...323946&page=13

And here's Disney Japan form page to contact them:

https://disney-studio.jp/inquiry_product.jsp

Break a leg/good luck. I hope you get really lucky with your contact with them and change everything they have done until now.

Edit: Looks like that form was suppressed. Heres another page https://www.disney.co.jp/onlinehelp/inquiry.html

I want English subtitles on the 3D Blu-Rays for all speaking scenes. Just like they are doing now. You can better understand and follow the movie with subtitles on a movie or tv show. For me its a dealbreaker if a release do not have English subtitles on all speaking parts. So what they are doing now i believe the biggest majority like. The release is not for the American market. Even Blu-Ray’s in America has English subtitles on them. As they should. That a Japan release put English subtitles on the releases here is a luxuary. One thing is certain they aren’t putting 2 English subtitles tracks on.

Sadly, we’re lucky to get these ridiculously expensive pain-in-the-ass-to-acquire Japanese exclusives at all. I’m amazed they even >have< an English subtitle track.

Here's another workaround.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...9#post20265869

Basically, find a subtitle file(SRT) that only shows what needs translating(for example, Chinese for Shang Chi), play it on a large tablet(I use Surface Pro) with subtitle player(I used Pengiun subtitle player), place the tablet right below the TV.

If you can find SRT files for other movies, you can prob edit it yourself for same result.
