Nope. Still freezes playing any of the 4K LOTR or Hobbit movies. I'm giving up on physical 4K. I never thought I'd say that as I used to hate streaming.

Oppo no longer makes new players, so no need to tell me that you Oppo owners don't have problems. Just know that sooner or later your players will die.

The only discs I have trouble with on my player are the six LOTR discs, the three BTTF discs and Jaws. The 3 LOTR discs all lock up and pixilate at around where there is ten minutes left on each disc. The BTTF discs do the same at about 20 min in. Jaws locks up when Brody gets the phone call about the girl's body being found on the beach at the beginning of the film. At this point I still buy 4K/BD combo packs in case I do decide to upgrade my player in the future (I have no desire to do so at this time). If it is a 4K only release I will skip it and if the discs are housed in sleeves I will skip it altogether. I still have around a hundred 4K discs that play flawlessly. I have never had a problem with a DVD, BD or SACD on the player, and yes I know they use different lasers.

You're right. I checked the player again with my HDR display, and DVDs do play in SDR, even with Dolby Vision on. I apologize; it was my mistake. Still bad though that they don't want to fix this for 1080p Blu-ray. The least they could do was to add an Auto option to detect Dolby Vision discs, and keep the On option to force everything to Dolby Vision for those who like it better that way, like you do.

Question

On sale for $179.99, and in stock at my local Best Buy.

Is this a good introductory UHD player? (I don't have a 4K TV yet; it's on the horizon though.)

Waste of money for something that can’t play video games or stream worth a shit

I can't speak for anyone else but i've had nothing but success with this player over the past 4 years, never had any discs freeze or skip. Only minor issue i had was the player turned on by itself and i wasn't able to turn it off with the remote so i had to unplug it and plug it back in.

It's been pretty good for me. Still gets firmware updates.

Good introductory player if you can't afford another brand or better Sony player. Supports HDR & Dolby Vision, 1% of discs seem to have a problem where they'll freeze for a few seconds (5-15) at a layer switch then continue playing normally. I used to have the same problem with an early DVD player.

Problem discs for me have been The Ten Commandments and The Beastmaster, everything else has played perfectly that I've tried.

1.) Why would it play games? I'm looking for a UHD disc player. If I was a gamer, I'd go for a PS5 or something.

2.) I use streaming devices for streaming. I have Amazon Fire Stick and Roku in my house, and when I get a 4K HDTV I'll upgrade to a 4K device (probably Chromecast with Google TV).

Question

This player seems to be the lowest-priced name brand that includes Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. My one hesitation is that I've read about discs freezing / skipping. That sounds super annoying! How can something fail at job one like that?

One thing it's missing is HDR10+. How much of a difference is there between HDR10 and HDR10+? Is 10+ worth holding out for? Might it be added via a firmware update?

There's far more Dolby Vision titles than HDR10+, and it generally seems like the majority of the HDR10+ ones also have Dolby Vision.

Adding/using HDR 10+ which is a Samsung proprietary software would require Sony to make payments to Samsung.

This. Is. Never. Going. To. Happen.

So I just tried playing a few movies with LPCM 2.0 tracks and the audio wouldn't play. After fidgeting around with the audio settings it seems the only thing I needed to do with my current settings was change the DTS Neo:6 to off. It was originally on cinema.
I'm pretty ignorant to all the technical stuff so I was hoping someone could explain to me what exactly that DTS Neo:6 setting is and if I will notice any change with other movies if I leave it on off?

I've had mine since it came out, it's a solid player. Really the only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't automatically switch to and from DV, you have to manually turn it on and off (if you leave DV on it outputs everything including normal blus inDV mode, which can mess up non-DV titles)

DV is superior to HDR10+ in every way, it's not worth it for the small number of titles that are + exclusives.

I only buy Sony TVs so it's pretty much guaranteed it won't.

HDR10+ is a dead format...

I don't know why anyone should care about it...
